Thoughts from a professional poet
I am a jobbing poet
For seven hours a day.
I sit and I write poetry
That’s how I earn my pay.
Sometimes I’m called to meetings
Where people wail and curse
It never seems to concern me
When scribbling lines of verse
I am a jobbing poet.
But it’s a little queer,
That though the company’s large, I am
The only poet here
The poems don’t get published.
They sit up on my shelf.
But still I’m paid to write them down
While doing little else
I raise it with my colleagues
They shake their head and laugh
And question why a brokerage
Needs poets on its staff.
And every month my paycheck
Has errors at the top
Where it should say that I’m a poet
It says I’m Head of Ops.
