Capitalism always creates a form of social hierarchy

89
ninjafrog658•

Social hierarchy is something so deeply rooted into the lizard brains of human beings that it cannot be undone with anything short of genetic engineering (likely to be disastrous) or hundreds of thousands more years of evolution.

No matter what system we’re under, be it capitalism, communism, feudalism or even anarchism, social hierarchy is always gonna exist.

TheScabYouPickOngay spider fucker•

honestly trying to eliminate social hierarchy sounds nice but have you accounted for the fact that we're humans and that's going to be realistically impossible?

-59
The420BlazersVirginian•

Social hierarchies are made up by human beings. You're basically letting a made up thing control you enough to say "hey maybe we shouldn't try to stop oppression."

75
[deleted]•

[edit] You have to be literally a child to think you could ever eliminate "hierarchies" from human nature, my god you're all so fucking embarrassingly stupid.

Good luck with high school, sorry about the day you realize this kind of idealism about human nature is basically pointless.

I gave up on large-scale social solutions to these problems a while ago, humans only have hope of evolution through literally changing human nature, probably on a biological level, not through willing it to be true and holding hands and singing songs.

Love and hope aren't magic, acknowledging that values are invented doesn't give you the power to change the entire world, or even a small portion of it.

-23
DERPSQUID9ska enjoyer•

You do know that there is no "fixed" human nature, right? People's behaviour changes depending on the environment that they live in. If you spend your life in an environment that incentivises greed and wealth at the expense of others, you will likely become greedy and selfish. If you spend your life in an environment that incentivises cooperation and caring for others, then you will probably value those instead.

Of course we won't get anywhere by just hoping, but refusing to even try is no better.

17
The420BlazersVirginian•

I know that, but your kind of mentality supports the notion that you might as well not try to stop oppression.

I’m glad it was so easy for you to completely fucking give up lol. Spineless

We could, you know, perhaps, maybe, try to reduce hierarchies? Even if we cant eliminate them all, having less is still better.

2
TheScabYouPickOngay spider fucker•

I'm not saying I want oppression to continue, but there are some people with ambition and some of those people will kill for it. Trying to maintain absolute equality would require extreme amounts of micromanagement depending on the scale we're talking about.

Do you really think this is innate to humans? Like we are just born like that? No, it's people adapting to an awful social-economic system that encourages behaviour like this so you can survive.

That's actually why something like anarchy is good, because then everything is distributed and people can simultaneously make decisions in their own communities

trying to eliminate diseases sounds nice but have you accounted for the fact that death is inevitable anyway so why bother

13
Skeletonparty101•

The smaller the group the better of a chance of it happening because people can build connection with each other

But Million people that's really is impossible

5
DERPSQUID9ska enjoyer•

How is it realistically impossible? Human nature isn't one fixed thing. Everyone is born a blank slate and their environment influences them one way or another. If you spend your life in an environment that incentivises greed, wealth, and power even if you have to screw over someone else, then you will probably be greedy, selfish, and machiavellian. If you spend your life in an environment that instead incentivises cooperation and caring for others, then you will probably value those instead.

Besides, declaring it impossible without even trying is exactly the kind of mindset that the people at the top of the hierarchy want us to have so that they stay in power.

I don't think social hierarchy is something that's brought about from the values of a place you live in. It's just one of those things nature hard wired into our monkey brains. You can try to fight it but such thing as a equal social hierarchy isn't possible. That's not saying that people people can't have equal rights.

-1
DERPSQUID9ska enjoyer•

But far back when humans were hunter-gatherer, there really wasn't a social hierarchy. Everyone needed to do their share of work or everyone risked starving. We didn't have large surpluses of food until after agriculture was invented. In addition, if you had an unfruitful day, or if you were too sick or injured to get food, then someone else in your group would give you their extra food. Because losing a member of your group meant less people to get food and a greater risk of the remaining members starving. If you didn't do your share of work or didn't share what you hunted or gathered, then you would be ostracized because someone hogging all the food and not providing anything would be worse than losing a person to gather food. Unless you made amends, you were guaranteed to starve the next time you can't kill any animals, find any plants to eat, or get too sick or injured to function because there would be no one to help you.

If social hierarchy was "hard wired into our monkey brains," then why wouldn't the most primitive example of humans have it?

And don't say that the ostracized people were a separate social class because they were entirely excluded from "society" rather than remaining in it and getting less privileges. Also, they weren't born excluded from their group and could potentially rejoin their group if they could make amends. Contrast this with social hierarchy both today and historically, where people are almost always born into their social class, upwards social movement is incredibly difficult if not impossible, and the products of the labor of the people in lower classes goes, at least in part, to upper classes.

This might sound dumb but this is exactly why I just give away a couple of items to other players I meet in random Minecraft survival servers. I’m probably never coming back, so I just give away a portion of something that’s somewhat irrelevant to me atm

i think about this often because that’s literally the point of trade and society. The literal reason we have an economic system is to benefit everyone, and if it doesn’t do that, the. it has failed. It sucks to think about how much cool shit we would’ve advanced in such as medicine, technology, computing, space travel, and just being able to appreciate the things we have to their fullest if it wasn’t for capitalism and petty wars holding us back. i’m so frustrated with this world.

Just because someone doesnt believe in Darwinism, doesnt mean it doesnt apply to them. So if greedy fuck are able to plop out more children, then there will be a tendency that there´s gonna be more greedy fucks in the future. However part of that can be mitigated by memes.

Rethious•

The point of society is to give people the opportunity to self-define what is meaningful. If someone finds meaning out of accumulating money or building a massive pyramid, none of us have the right to use violence to impose our own view of the good life on them.

-5
needlessoptionsOP•

I would say under our current system, the ones imposing violence the most are the ones in pursuit of wealth. If someone finds meaning in working a menial job, should those in pursuit of meaning by accumulation of wealth by drilling for oil have the right to literally destroy the entire biosphere? What about weapons manufacturers?

If someone finds meaning out of, say, painting, should those in pursuit of wealth have the right to use the threat of starvation to make them work a menial wage job?

7
Rethious•

Oil drilling involves negative externalities which provide valid reason for societal intervention.

Addressing your artist example, I’m not in favor of letting the poor starve. People should generally pay for the resources they use, given that other people had to work to get them. So if you can’t financially support yourself doing art, I think it’s just that you’d be expected to find another job whether “menial” (a fairly classistly derisive expression IMO) or not. After all, you being fed requires the labor of people in “menial” jobs such as farmers, transportation operators, and everyone who works at a grocery store.

Why not do the work now? A better future will only come if we work make the present better. How else do you expect a better future to come? The future is just someone else's present and things won't get better if we keep refusing to fix things ourselves.
