Title: I finished Immortals Fenyx Rising about 10 months ago, and I remember nothing about it

Full text: For the past three years, I end up disappointing myself as I read list after list of all the games you beautiful Patient Gamers put together. The end of the year "here's every game I completed lists" are downright wonderful. I try to read all of them that get posted because I love reading the differing opinions. It continuously reinforces why this is one of my favorite gaming communities on the web. And, without fail, every year I just don't find the time to do it. I always write down what I've completed, but don't bother putting my thoughts down. But this year, I swore it would be different. I'll just write them as the year goes! I told myself.

So it's October, and I haven't written a one. Damn it, I thought, I really want to make one of those lists this year. Alright, time to get to work. I sat down and pulled up the list and started to get to work... the first game on that list: Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Huh.

Alright.

What was this game about?

According to my PlayStation trophy list, I finished this game 1/11/21. It wasn't hard to find, since the trophy I looked at to figure this out was the Platinum. So... I liked it enough to Platinum it? Then why can't I remember anything about it?

As a rational adult, I did the first thing anyone would do in this situation: panic. At the ripe ole' age of 33, there it is. My memory has failed me. So I moved on to the next games I completed. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2? I had to edit it down after writing three pages worth of opinions. Rage 2? Don't get me started on that disappointment. Alright, that's not working. Maybe my memory has a time limit. How about the games I completed before Immortals at the tail end of 2020?

The Demon's Souls remake was almost a let down because I remembered everything about the original and blazed through it with no problem. That's not fair, though, since I sank hundreds of hours into the original so, what did I beat before that?

Spider-Man: Miles Morales. I remember pretty much everything about this game, and loved it. Before that was Maneater... ok I remember everything about this stupid ass shark simulator and can even randomly quote some of the Chris Parnell quips throughout.

Honestly though, what do I remember about Immortals Fenyx Rising? I'm not going to use Google because well, that just seems like cheating.

It has a terrible title because the original also-not-so-great-but-still-a-million-times-better title "Gods and Monsters" was scraped because Monster Energy Drink had a problem with it. This isn't a joke, btw, that really happened.

You play as Fenyx, a mortal that has to save the Greek world from mythological creatures with powers she got from... somewhere?... to do... something? There's lots of climbing, and I remember Zeus was narrating it? No. He was listening to someone else narrating it and would literally only speak in jokes. Not the narrator, but Zeus. Who was the narrator? Zeus kept making bad joke after bad joke, and the narrator was getting annoyed, but the writers seemed proud of themselves. You know, in God of War III, Kratos is so one dimensional in his hatred for Zeus, and I'm convinced the Immortals version and God of War version are one in the same now and the truth of it was that Kratos just couldn't take one more joke when he was living on Olympus.

Let's see, what else? Oh. There was a large villain that just looked like generic video game villain. Probably had a name like Frodnonag or something. There were lots and lots of secrets scattered throughout the gigantic map but it was always the same thing you found before. Humorously, I can remember some of the enemies just by thinking of greek mythology. So I remember that there were minotaurs, cerberuses, harpies, and so on, but I can't remember specific bosses nor characters throughout. I do remember that there were four gods that assisted you through the story, but they all made cringe-inducing jokes like Zeus and it was just annoying. Was there actually five? No. Four. Five? Meh.

Combat was... fun? I do remember that when you dealt the final blow to the last enemy they'd shoot up to the sky. It presented the illusion that Fenyx was powerful, when really the combat felt like pretty typically third person hack and slash without any depth.

The world was colorful, which was nice. Although, despite being initially pretty there really wasn't anything hidden within it that made me go "whoa" and really stand out.

But really, does it not speak to a game's legacy for how blatantly forgettable it was? Evidently, I spent 55 hours (!) playing this thing but walked away wasting 2+ days of my life for near zero memory of the adventure it took me on?

Earlier in this post I brought up Rage 2, and I hated that game. But really, I think I'd rather play a game I hate and remember instead of a totally inoffensive game that escapes memory not even a full year later.
