Just Unsubbed from r/askgaybros. One of the most toxic, surprisingly bigoted, and frustrating subreddits I've ever been in. (TL;DR Inside)

At first, it was "little" things, like celebrating notoriously really awful people simply because they are gay, then I saw many slurs being used (a lot of the R slur) and even straight up aggressively hating on those who actually fought for gay rights. But then, I noticed the transphobia.

In the past two weeks I have seen at least five posts just from scrolling that seemed either blatantly transphobic or acting as dogwhistles. Either way, all of them had replies full of slur usage, bigotry, internalized homophobia, ableism, and horrible transphobia. If you question it you get spammed with downvotes and replies. I checked the accounts of these people, many of them being part of notirously bigoted groups, one supporting blackface, another that openly said they hate women, and one person even said they'd punch my teeth out for saying "the queer community". Most of them just said shit along the lines of "I hate trans extremists trying to force us to change how we live" which, for a sub full of gay guys that are mostly adults, is extremely funny given that was the same nonsense thrown at us by homophobes for years.

I have, as a gay guy, been called homophobic, threatened, insulted with slurs, etc simply because I think this is not healthy behavior especially for gay guys or the queer/LGTBQ+ community in general.

I have never had that many issues on reddit, I mostly stick to NOT problematic meme pages, video game lore groups, a cooking thing, etc, but this has been a genuinely awful experience and I implore any other gay men or queer people in general to AVOID this subreddit. It's bigoted, ableist, transphobic, and full of internalized homophobia.

Judging by the fact similar posts about this have been made, this should be completely unsurprising to anyone here.

TL;DR

askgaybros is a homophobic, transphobic, ableist subreddit full of extremely toxic people feeding off of eachother and becoming worse. The sub has some good posts, but is filled with an alarming amount of reactionary views and internalized bigotry. The sub has practically zero moderation and is doing nothing to save itself.

Edit almost two hours after posting: I just got a DM from one of the people in that sub telling me to >!self-harm!<. I'm obviously not going to do it and that stuff doesn’t get to me but I'm not going to say who it was for obvious reasons. If you want proof of the DM I have an SC but seriously this is messed up. I reported them obviously. Don't interact with this sub guys, its really just not worth it at all.
