I married the same man twice

Remember touching lips when we were wed?

You slurped my snot as though it wasn't gross.

Remember when we broke your grandma's bed:

the house so hot we thought we'd surely roast.

Remember nights when you would hold me close:

your comfort welcome to my broken mind.

Remember when I needed you the most:

you only thought of leaving me behind.

Remember saying leaving would be kind:

you said that separation would be good.

Remember when we had the papers signed?

Our ties were never really understood.

Remember when we got our second chance?

We had a stronger bond without romance.

For romantic imagery, I recommend steering clearing of “slurping snot.” <mild shudder>

Your rhyming scheme seems a little off-kilter, the meter is hard to follow, but I like (most of) the content and emotion.

Hahaha yeah I get that. Like it or not though it was intentional as that really happened and it is supposed to be kind of funny as that was how our relationship ended up. He has since passed but this was sort of a memorial for the ups and downs of our relationship.

What is this poem about?

AinoKalevalaOP•

It is about my relationship with my late husband who I married, divorced, and then remarried.

It is very good:)

In contrast to the other comment that said they disliked the snot, I do like the fact that you use 'dirty' imagery in this poem. I think however that the poem needs more things that are related to the intimacy of being okay with things one would normally find dirty when coming from another person. Right now the fact that you only use the imagery of snot in this kind of throws the rest out of balance.

I really like the idea formulated where you 'marry' the same person twice, albeit in a different way. It'd be cool if this were a bit more pronounced.

The ending line(s) are really strong!

This is a good one, the ending feels slightly melancholic, I'm not sure if that was your intention?

Also, the line

"you thought my freedom from you would be good."

kind of breaks the rythm for me.

Other than that good job! :)

I changed it to "you said that separation would be good". Better?

Totally agree on the rhythm thing. Can't think of how to fix it yet. It is supposed to be a bit melancholic as this is about my late husband.

Stronger bond without romance is a perfect closing or maybe summary of this piece.

I take this poem to be about a marriage that divorce seems likely, even though the bond between husband and wife seemed strong at the start. Am I in the right ballpark?

I liked the rhyme scheme in this poem. I liked the reiteration of the B rhyme in lines 2, 4, 5, and 7. Considering you wrote 14 lines with some kind of quatrain offshoot and a couplet as the last two lines, it appears you're attempting to write a Shakespearean Sonnet. Those are a personal favorite of mine and it makes me happy to see someone else writing them. They're hard to compose, especially mastering the iambic pentameter. The meter was pretty strong in lines 11, 12, 13, and 14 but don't really consolidate in earlier lines.

Lastly, I actually kind of like the imagery in line 2, contrary to what the comments say. Love is often depicted as a fairy tale where everything is perfect and cartoony. The human body is gross sometimes and in a relationship you're going to have to deal with stuff like that on occasion.

Just keep practicing your sonnets. I think you're on a decent path right now and if you keep working at it, you'll nail it. Like I said, the sonnet is a very hard poem format to master and I can't even get it 100% right all the time. But you've got something going good right now, you just need to hone it in.

AinoKalevalaOP•

It's actually supposed to be a Spenserian sonnet. Rhyme scheme ABAB BCBC CDCD EE. Tried to go for iambic pentameter but didn't quite get it everywhere. Thanks for the encouragement.

RobertvsFlvdd•

You're certainly welcome And I should have realized that. But I've yet to see a Spencerian sonnet on this subreddit. Quite a unique choice.

A well-executed Spenserian sonnet! It's clear that it has a lot of emotional valence for you.

Line 2: "slurped my snot" is, no pun intended, a little too on the nose. It's too gross for this poem, and as such, it feels out of place. I think replacing the word "slurped" would be enough to get it to fit back into the piece tonally; consider a revision like "Looking past snot" or "Ignoring snot".

Line 3: "Grandma" should probably be lowercase.

Line 4: I would remove the comma after "so hot".

Lines 8-9: You repeat the word "leaving" here. If there is an intended effect of this repetition, I didn't benefit from it. If you can replace the repetition with a synonym or similar turn of phrase, it may strengthen the poem.

Lines 11-12: This piece could use a stronger volta, and as such, I would rework these lines to capture the concept of reuniting with your ex-husband rather than continuing the process of the divorce, which is already made clear in the previous four lines. If you keep these lines, I would recommend changing "we'd" to "we" to improve the flow.

Overall, I enjoyed this piece. It was an interesting portrayal of a process that doesn't occur very often. I thought your meter was strong and the rhyme scheme felt natural - usually I find Spenserian sonnets repetitive, but not so with this one. Reading the other comments, I see that this piece is about your late husband - I'm sorry for your loss. If you feel comfortable doing so, I think exploring your feelings connected to his passing in the last few lines of this piece might be a fruitful path for revision, but maybe that's another poem entirely.

Well done - keep the poems coming!

Thanks for your feedback. I'm keeping the snot bit as it is meant to be gross but I get how it is sort of jarring. I fixed grandma and got rid of the comma. I totally agree about the leaving repetition but I am still working on a way to rework that. I agree with further developing the reunification...if I sit on this for a while I bet I can do better. Again thanks for reading.

Brilliant emotive poetry. Couple of pointers comes to mind. Seems to me like this poem has an undulating effect, the punctuation, the rejoicement, the separation and sadness, and the rebirth. However, when it came to separation, you mentioned it on 6 verses. And the renewed vows without romance only had the last two lines. My point is I think you believe in some symmetry in the fates of your love, yet it isn't fully crystallised in this poem. I can tell this is without a shadow of a doubt a beautiful brush stroke of life. You must make it reflect your episodes. I suggest reliving every pain and happiness in tandem. It's bittersweet, it lonely and it's wholesome. I want to see this love and loss come to life.

Brings back some of my own memories which is why I hope you take it as a positive display on my part. Well done.

2
AinoKalevalaOP•

Yeah several people have mentioned I need to develop the rebirth aspect. I will try to go back to the drawing board at some point and tighten this piece up.

I love the line about the snot. That really pushes it into a super personal realm but it’s still probably relatable to a lot of people. I also like how the structure also applies to the subject matter — every second line is slightly negative to juxtapose the positive.

The romantic imagery is vivid and strong at the beginning of this poem. “Slurped my snot” while definitely not sexy highlights the kind of passionate love you had and strikes me as a reader. The unconditional love is then juxtaposed perfectly as the poem moves to the partner leaving and the love somehow lost. However, the poem feels unfinished in a sense. Whether intentional or not, the final line leaves me confused and though fitting to leave out the imagery as the “stronger bond” is without the romance it’s hard to connect and understand how it’s now stronger.

1
AinoKalevalaOP•

Yeah I kind of ran out of room so to say. It is supposed to be a Spenserian sonnet so 14 lines. Another commenter on here suggested I try to clarify the fact that we were reunited in the end albeit as best friends and partners without a romantic relationship. If I am feeling creative I will try to go back to the drawing board with that in mind.

[deleted]•

I like the shifting emotions throughout it, the ending is really sad in my opinion. Is it meant to be sad or am I missing the point?

1
AinoKalevalaOP•

It is supposed to be a little sad as it is about my late husband but the fact that we didn't have a romantic relationship in the end did not negate our life long partnership while he was alive. We went through so much together including divorce but came back together to coparent despite the lack of romance as when we were super young and married. I wrote this because I missed my best friend and I wanted to remember what we had together.

I love this a lot, especially the tone changes throughout it. It reminds me that all relationships have their ups and downs and not everything turns out the way you wanted or expected it too. The last line is interesting and leaves me wondering whether or not this is a happy ending?

1
AinoKalevalaOP•

Sort of. We got back together after our divorce and had a kid but unfortunately he passed last year.
