[1852] Opening to a Sword and Sorcery novel
Edit: I just want to express my gratitude with this community. This was my first time posting here, and the response has been amazing. Y’all are great. If anyone would like to talk about their own work, feel free to PM me.
Hey everyone!
I've been working on a novel tentatively titled "Tales from the Witch Hunter." It's an episodic novel divided into 4 novellas that follow the adventures of Arthur, the titular Witch Hunter.
What I'm sharing is the opening to the third short story: The Death of Reason.
This scene follows the opening fight. Arthur has just collected a bounty on the warlock, "Adius of Mooresville," and now hopes to restock his supplies.
My main area of concerns:
- My prose: By God, I can't stress this one enough. Tear into this. Everything from sentence structure, sentence length, verb/noun choice, activity, passive voice, and so on. If it doesn't read well, then it's already shit. Go nuts!
- Engagement: Is it interesting, boring, downright dull?
- Dialogue: How's the dialogue? Does it effectively explore the characters and their personality?
- Characters: What do you think of the characters? Do they seem real or fake? Do you like them or dislike them? What would you change about them, if anything?
- World-building and descriptions: I'm mostly concerned on whether or not I have too much descriptions.
- Pacing: Does it meander too much, too little, or is it just right? This is another big one for me.

I turned on commenting out of convenience for everyone. Obviously, try to keep it professional. Thanks, and I look forward to getting torn apart :)
