Onion salmonella warning in the US - what are you making with no onions?

Ask ECAH

Based on the CDC's warning about the potential for salmonella in unlabeled onions and onions imported from Mexico in the US, I had to toss the onions I planned to use this week. I feel like onions are the base of everything I cook... what are some of your favorite dinner ideas that don't contain onions?

Just cook the onions. Nothing raw. Heat will kill the bacteria so it’s safe to eat. And clean up well. One of the reasons to not have rare chicken is salmonella so you just cook and clean in the same way you would with chicken. Hope the info helps

Also you can use more garlic instead.

This right here. If it’s an item you would eat raw then it’s an issue. But if you are going to cook the food it will be fine. We had a recall on green onions a while back. Which was unfortunate since I like raw green onions on a ton of things. But actual onions around here normally cook with meat or go into soup, they are getting hot enough to kill everything.

Especially if you caramelize them.

I hate the texture of onions. I generally use onion powder or dried minced if I’m feeling brave.

Same here. Shelf stable items I can always have on hand. Fresh onions for sautés or garnish usually.

Everything. Garlic is better.

Grocery stores list country of origin labeling (COOL) for produce. The Kroger affiliate I wotk at has it listed on their shelf tags/signs. It's simple enough to check where they came from if you still want to pick some up from the store.

Well if you tossed the onions already just adapt you meals for the rest of the week to garnish with green onions and cook with extra garlic. I really dislike dehydrated onions and onion powder but those are certainly options.

I have a tummy condition when I eat onions so I never use them :) compensate with extra seasonings, fresh herbs, and you're fine. I love making a bibimbap with ground beef, quick pickled baby cucumbers or carrots, and rice. Or fish with baked potatoes, seasoned with lemon and whatever herbs I have on hand. Or chicken with basically anything. It's second nature to me now to just leave it off but I know my coworker chops up an onion into absolutely every meal, so part of me wonders how one person can eat so much onion.

I’ve had an aversion to cooked onions over the last few years, so if a dish really needs onion I just use onion powder. Fajitas and cheesesteaks are prime examples of dishes I would just season with onion powder.

So many dishes just use it as a filler item anyway (looking at lots of soups out there). Maybe give us specific examples of the dishes you make and we can help you improvise.

I use powdered onion as a substitute.

Damn, without raw red onions, my spinach salads wont slap nearly as hard!

….just wash your onions

Washing doesn’t actually help in this case. The salmonella is most likely inside the onion. Cooking definitely helps, though.
