Why does it seem like everyone in America is hiring right now?

Are there not enough people in the country that want to work? Because it seems like every single place I pass has a hiring sign.

Lots of people on unemployment, a lot of younger people don't want to work. Especially in retail. We have a huge shortage of workers from fast food places to grocery stores.

I work in a large retail establishment

We are having problems having enough people working overnights to stock

I legitimately worked seven pallets in five and a half hours last night

I'm glad we're getting a raise

Because those places pay crap.

The coronavirus pandemic fundamentally shifted the workforce. The coronavirus killed 200-300k working age people, and many other retired when the pandemic hit or when things started opening back up. A lot of other people learned to manage without a job (for example, instead of a two-parent household where both parents work, one has a job and the other is a stay at home parent and drops out of the workforce). Unemployment is back down to 4.8%, which is starting to get dangerously low. Since these people have all learned to manage without these low-wage jobs, businesses have to increase wages, but even those wages aren't enough to bring workers back in.

Yeah, but from what I heard the pay for all the jobs is terrible, it's actively hurting both the business and the people to pay this low for jobs.

I mean I work at a major retailer stocking overnight and they are raising our paid 18.50 an hour tomorrow

Nobody wants to work. People got laid off from the pandemic and now everywhere is hiring at shitty pay levels.

A lot of people got laid off because of covid. Especially big companies where employees are overworked and underpaid. Once they were laid off, they decided not to come back because they realized they didn't want to go back to those jobs. Now those people are on unemployment until they find a better job, meanwhile the big companies are scrambling to fill the spots to the point where they're raising their wages

Bruh Walmart literally raised it's overnight pay to 18.50

They say that it's "to compete with Amazon"

I legitimately think it's because nobody wants to work shitty retail jobs anymore

They're hiring but paying shit and not giving good benefits so ppl are Hong to find jobs that do offer those things.
