Fence best practice

What are the minimum requirements for containing a husky outdoors? What are some common failure points?

I have a 6 foot vinyl clad chain link fence around about a third of an acre.

There is a bit of extra fencing buried into the dirt at the base, tacked in place with rebar and Quikrete.

I’ve only had one climber, and he waited until there were snowbanks/drifts to plot his escape.

Thankfully my other husky immediately let me know he’d taken off.

After that, we cleared the area by the fence with the snowblower. Got some seriously dirty looks for that.

I’ve had a few friends who had invisible fence, and their huskies just dashed through.

I’ve had one husky that was 99% trustworthy off-leash. Still, that 1% chance…not worth the worry for me.

Leashes and fences for me and my crew.

I got lucky and worked on training mine on the boundary when I got him home and haven't had an issue without a fence.

That being said, I'd assume a standard 6 foot privacy fence properly installed would handle majority of huskies and if you have a concern from there make adjustments.

You can put pvc on top of they still climb up for example

We have a four foot metal fence. Very difficult to climb and neither has shown an inclination to jump. The older one is a climber but we don't keep anything close to the fence that he could use.

We also supervise outdoor time.

They like to dig under and can fit through small holes...smaller than you would expect. They can also figure out latches. You almost have to base it on the dog and their proclivities.

Most Husky rescues require a six foot privacy fence. Unfortunately, our neighborhood standards prevent that...so four foot metal fence it is.

I guess I’d say the ideal is a 6.5ft wood fence (which I believe is the standard wood fence) Little taller wouldn’t hurt like a 7ft.

Common weak points, huskies can dig.

With that being said, it also has a lot to do with how you train your husky.

My house was recently built in 2020 and we haven’t put up a full fence yet, so I’m currently using a temporary 3-3.5 ft high vinyl fence. It’s weak, kinda flimsy. He can jump it or walk right through it. But he doesn’t and never has. He understands his boundaries.
