Almost all teams are shooting worse from 3 so far this year. Jazz, Nuggets, Pistons have regressed the most.

If one team regresses you could chalk it up to personnel changes or an individual player in a slump. When most of the league regresses it raises other questions.

Could be an early-season getting-the-cobwebs-off type slump. Could be the changes in officiating are resulting in changes in how teams play offense. Could be the new ball.

It’s the ball. We had a same/similar issue the last time the changed the handle on the ball.

It’s honestly the only explanation for how cold Clarkson has been.

It's also less shooting foul calls, closeouts are harder now.

Yeah it is definitely the ball. When something is muscle memory, the smallest difference in feel takes time to adjust to.

I used to be into competitive video games and one day my keyboard broke before a tournament. I bought a new, better keyboard at the store then went and played ASAP. I was off the entire night.

Couldn't it just be that crowds are back? We know that the bubble created a unique environment as far as shooting goes, and most teams still didn't have fan attendance last season either.

Pistons arenas are empty af and theyre shooting the worst in NBA history since 1960

Crowds are a totally viable theory. too. I didn't think of that one. I didn't go back farther than last season, but if last season was unusually high you could chalk that up to emptier arenas making it easier to shoot.

Or try to track 3P% by arena last season to see if those that had sparser crowds had higher %.

Jenaxu:uta-5: Jazz•

Could be, but the Jazz are shooting almost a full 10% lower this season than they were playing with full fans in the playoffs last year and it doesn't get much more rowdy than that. Ofc that's just one team, so far from anything definitive, but it's been weird to see so many guys all seemingly slump at the same time without a drastic decrease in quality of looks.

Counter point, Jazz passes per game have gone down dramatically this year and aren't running the pick and roll as efficiently which started all that ball movement. Joe Ingles gone from ageless to playing like is 50 as well.

Full crowds + ball + less FTs for rhythm is my guess

Listened to the Mismatch, and KOC brought up a scary point about Utah: they’re ranked 2^nd in offensive rating, and they’ve been shooting the 3^rd most 3s, but they’re ranked 25^th in 3pt%.

Once they start falling at least average the offense is going to be scary

ProudBoyDurant:den-4: Nuggets•

probably because our 2 best shooters are out injured/playing through injury

Yeah, no wonder, we have Murray, MPJ and now Barton out. Surprisingly Campazzo, Austin Rivers and Jeff Green don’t shoot as well

DesolationRobotOPJazz•

Yeah Nugs have a specific reason. Like I said, any one team regresses and you can probably find a reason. 25/30 teams regress and there's a common issue.

It’s the ball. Remember someone doing a story on the different college basketballs and how much they affected shooting percentages. Can be a lot bigger deal than people think

We're on pace to be the worst shooting team since the 60s. And we actually generate pretty decent looks too.

Pistons fans thought Wayn3 was hitler but actually he was the only thing keeping us from all time horribility

grumpy_toewsBulls•

Last year was an outlier, about 1% on average higher than the previous 4-5 years.

This year is down a little more than 1% so far. I imagine some of it is the ball (although FT% isn't an outlier). Crowds plus the rule changes allowing for better defense I'd guess factor more so than the ball. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see it regress to the mean though.

I wonder if part of it is playstyle. Teams are taking an extra 3 a game over last year, and it's up 4 a game from 4 years ago. Eventually you'd think there's a tipping point where the added 3PA aren't being taken by players who can make them. Or guys who can are taking too many. 50 players are averaging over 6 3PA/G, 22 of them, almost half, are shooting below 35%.

Does a foul negate a missed three? If so, the change in how fouls are called could be contributing

2
RahnamattaHeat•

And to think Pop doesn't like 3s

2

he doesn't, lol. spurs are 29th for 3PA (7th for 3P%).

full crowds

last year was the highest % ever because of no crowds

Isn't league wide 3-pt shooting always lower early in the season?

Excellent chart. The ones that increased all had significant personnel changes. One even lost a player that didn't shoot 3s lol

Not surprised about the Pistons, sadly Cade is a bust.
