I don't want do many trees.

We had some weed trees popping up in our yard and we waited years to get around to removing them. Now the tree company had to get a tree removal permit from the city, and the city is requiring that we plant an equal number of trees to replace the weed trees. The problem is there isn't room for so many trees on the property, that's why we needed to get them removed in the first place.

Do we just if ignore the city's replanting requirements and hope no one notices?

Weed is more of a shrub IMO but they can get pretty tall.

I know at least in my area (Tigard) there is a program where builders put trees for free in people's yards that sign up. It's so they can offset trees they took out when building new homes.

I'm not sure if that's available in all of metro and if a private citizen can do it that way, but you may be able to just plant them somewhere else through that program.

Another fan of Crossbow. Some idiot planted a Magnolia next to the foundation. Cut it down, drilled holes in the stump and poured crossbow into the holes. Almost dead several years later. BAMBOO. Best thing ever. Clip stems, paint Crossbow on cut stem. Repeat as necessary. Effing grove is dead after 5 years of this technique without expensive and exhausting digging (still have salamanders too b/c of paint technique)

I *love* Crossbow

Crossbow and they suddenly died unexpectedly. Only do that to weeds tho.

Crossbow?

It's a herbicide, available from most hardware stores. It will kill pretty much everything. My thought was that dead tree removal likely won't require any permits. Is considered somewhat safe around non-tree species, i.e. pets and humans after 24 hours.

I don’t use poison on my property but you can do what you want.

My point is mostly how much money you want to spend. Yes, the better option is to hire a tree service to remove those and plant new trees.

Do we just if ignore the city's replanting requirements and hope no one notices?

Based on your responses, the answer is no. Hire a professional tree service, pay for them then hire them again to plant trees so you're compliant with Oregon and City law. What answer where you expecting?

It’s a brand of herbicide.

Oh poison. Yeah just pour poison all over your yard OP. That’ll fix it.

It is a targeted poison. Think of it like chemotherapy. Not great but a better option than dangerous surgery or death, especially if they are dealing with an invasive species.

Can you plant an equal number somewhere else?

You can remove a tree less than 12" in diameter without a permit.

THIS. Look at the city regulations unless these have been growing for years you won't need a permit.

I would need to look up the specifics but according to the tree removal companies that's not the case. I think there is a minimum diameter but it's pretty small. It's not 12 in.

It's 12" at breast height for yard trees.. Here you go:

Shhhh.

I removed a mountain ash from my backyard a few weeks ago. Did its myself for the cost of tools. It was a dying and a hazard to my property and my neighbors.

I love trees. Trees are a great way to combat global warming. However, Portland's increasing nanny state regulations are not always well considered.

I just read today that Portland banned "real estate love letters". These are the letters sent by prospective buyers of a property designed to tug at the heart strings of sellers: Example: "We are a young couple just starting out and want our kids to go XXX elementary and your house is a perfect match! Our lives will be forever changed is you will consider our humble offer!!"

Why did Portland do this? Apparently they were very concerned that prospective buyers might inadvertently reveal details about their race, religion or creed that might encourage discrimination by sellers. This certainly seems to be a dramatic example of violating free speech protections. Not to mention a coddling, paternalistic attitude by city leaders. They are going be sued into reversing this dumb ban.

What does this have to do with trees? Portland does not have the capacity to enforce the various nit picking regulations they like to think up. I'm a HUGE supporter of building permits, safety regulations, and the like. They are born from a long history of death and stupidity. But at the moment they seem to be making a play at being Twitter heroes.

God help us all.

The law you're talking about was not passed at the city level. It is a state law.

Did they already pull the permit? If so, I think you can just pay a fine. If not then find a different company that will remove w/o a permit.

Someone cut down a tree by the tacobell on Hall and we have received numerous "threats" from the city. I'm normally a "tis better to ask forgiveness than permission" kinda guy, but you should be aware that trees are extremely expensive before you do anything rash.

If you're in Portland there is a Forrest department. They do all the recommendations, you can use them to find bonded arborists or ask for further information, they are really very helpful.

I'm sure the tree police won't be visiting you. Use a gun to remove the trees yes. Saw and helper. Sure nobody will care.
