Went to the gun show and bought a new toy

I had an Utra CDP II. Sent it to the factory twice and it never was reliable with anything but ball. Worst $1200 I ever spent.
I seem to be constantly hearing about reliability issues with these guns, especially the II series.
My brother had that same model and had the same problem, among others.
Have the Ultra Covert II. Never had any problem with reliability. Never jammed.
So jealous. I shot one of those a loved it right away, but I live in Massachusetts, so there goes that dream...
you can own this gun in MA. right?
No Kimbers in MA unfortunately. They have not been put through the testing required to allow them to be sold here.
One more place just added to the list of places I won't live.
It could be worse. But not too much worse.
I can't believe this is constitutional.
The whole "testing" thing is placed under the guise of consumer protection policies. So the firearms need to fit a strict criteria in order to be sold by a dealer in MA. A few of which I can remember, such as 10 lb trigger pull, a safety device needs to be sold with the firearm, and it needs to have a loaded chamber indicator. The incentive on the dealers end is huge fines and I believe having their permits and licenses revoked if they sell non-approved firearms.
The real bitch of it is that unless there is serious law change we will never see those nice high dollar guns like Kimber Pro Series, Les Bear, Dan Wesson, etc. This being mostly because it cuts heavily into the bottom line of a company to have to send 5 of their guns to be destroyed in a lab. The bullshit gets deeper however when the company makes modifications to the gun. By modification I mean as much as changing the sights to night sights requires 5 more firearms to be submitted for testing. Change the grips? more testing... I don't know what state your in, but if the wind is right you can probably smell the bullshit from where you are.

How many rounds do you have through it?

You didn't answer the question...
oh and to carry a pistol that you have never fired.....lol wut

Oh man I was drooling on the compact Kimbers at the Gun Show in Oregon. I will be saving up for one of these. Very nice pistol.
that's where I got it, thanks!
Up vote for Oregon subscribers and Kimber fans
I was at that show. Unfortunately, I live out of state, but since I've gotten my brother into shooting, he got a browning pump and a RIA 1911 in 9mm. He's sticking with 9mm for right now, since the ammo is so much cheaper, until I find a job in Portland and can reload for him.
I have one of those. IWB holster and you hardly know its there.
do you use the kimber branded holster or a different one?
I've been using a Crossbreed holster
How much did you pay for it? I'm heading to show this coming weekend and I am looking for this exact piece.
A lot. Kimbers are expensive. Very pretty though. I wanted to get one of these for my gf to carry but I decided on a Glock 26.
Thank you for arming your gf with a pistol that will actually be dependable.
Yeah, Im not a total 1911 hater but any tiny bit of doubt in dependablity irks me. I chose the Glock 26 because its dependable, a hell of a lot cheaper, and my magazines (Glock 19) will work in her firearm if the need ever came up. Those Kimbers are sweet little guns, I just cant justify the price right now for a firearm I wouldnt trust 100%.
I paid 739, it is just the base model, standard sights no laser.
sexy.
If that's a Ultra Carry II, I almost bought one. I went to the gun store with the intention of buying that pistol, but they didn't have it in stock. They did however have a S&W1911 Pro Series Subcompact that I bought instead. I've had no issues with it at all. (Not even the goofy swartz safety or the external extractor)
I love my Kimber 1911 Stainless Custom II TLE/RL - my fav pistol by far! (but I do hope to get a CZ-75 SP-01 from CZCustom.com soon, so I may find a new love!)
At least 5k round through it without any problems (since the first 500 - 3 FTE during them).
I had one of these. Absolutely loved the form factor and size, very smooth gun. However, I had nothing but trouble with it, as it seems most do with the compact Kimbers. After giving it a generous break-in of ~700 rounds it went back to Kimber for them to look at it. Horrible customer service, and the gun came back no better than it had been before even after another 400 rounds. I wanted to love this gun so much too, but really it was a nightmare as was Kimber customer service to deal with. The problems with these are well documented too. Some it seems are lucky and they act great, most do not. Here's to hoping yours is "one of the few good ones".
Was it Indy1500 gun show by any chance?
I am not a fan of the Kimbers. I think your better off with Wilson Combat. thoughts anyone?
I fucking love graphite. I wish everything was graphite.
she's purdy....
ugh kimbers, sorry but i think theres just so much better 1911s out there that dont cost as much
I'm actually looking to buy a 1911, what would you suggest for good value?
I've got a recently manufactured Springfield GI-spec in stainless. I fucking love the gun. Around 800 rounds through it in the past few months, no FTE or FTF. It's more than accurate enough for my shooting ability right now, when I become a better shot I expect I'll also pick up a Dan Wesson or something. The stock sights are nothing to write home about, that's my only gripe.
What do you want to do with it? Dan Wesson is probably the best quality for the price out there, but they ain't cheap.
Ruger 1911 is probably the best gun you can get for the money. They are a little hard to get now but in 6 months to a year they will be readily available at a good price.
springfield , and , s and w , are the best for the 500-1000 range, ria is the best under 500 but there kind of ugly, ria is by far the best value i bought one for under 400 dollars and i shoot shitty ammo through it and it has never malfunctioned, my springfield and sw shoot just as good they just look better
Do a reliability test with 500 rnds or more. Kimbers are notoriously unreliable and overpriced.

Haters gonna hate, I'm with you on this. Every pistol I own had to be broken in before it became consistently "reliable." Even then, there's still that margin of error that could cause a malfunction of some kind, which is something which surprises me that a lot of people down vote or just cannot seem to accept that mechanical devices are imperfect and may malfunction given the odds.
Unless it's a Gen3 Glock....
I've owned several pistols that were completely reliable out of the box, without any kind of break in period. Browning Hi-power, Ruger P-90, Sig P220, S&W 1076, Beretta 92 and 96, Glock 26, and my FNX-40 all worked completely reliable right out of the box. I would consider anything that didn't fire the first 99/100 rounds unreliable. The only major brand gun I've ever really had any reliability issues with is a Walthur PPK 380 and that was more of an ammunition compatibility issue.
It's not really anecdotal. Kimber's downward spiral is well known and has been going on for years.
Any duty/carry pistol that has to be broken in is junk.
I don't see why he's being down voted. When's the last time you had to "Break in" a XD or Glock? Why machine something with such tolerances that it must be broke in before it's truely reliable? Sounds like they should head back to the drawing board.
Unlike most other major firearm manufacturers, Kimber does not warrenty their products for life.
"Kimber firearms are warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year from the date of the original retail purchase as new merchandise"
I mention this because I know a few close friends that have been riddled with problems sending their's back and forth only to be told after the year it's now going to cost them to fix the problem.
Don't get me wrong, Kimber makes some BEATIFUL firearms and I think with more time given to R&D they could come out ahead and fix their rep the've built as of recent years.
I had one and never had a problem. The only thing I didn't like about it was the fact they don't stand behind their product like other companies do. Even Taurus has a lifetime warranty.
Really? How many Kimbers have you owned? You see I ask because I have two and they have both been flawless. Maybe before you parrot the rhetoric of the Internet's vocal minority you should check the facts out for yourself. I'd recommend going to a shop and renting one for a day but you probably won't.
Flawless? How many rounds and what models?
Why would I buy, let alone rent, an established shitty pistol? You gonna defend HiPoints and Lorcins next? http://10-8performance.blogspot.com/2010/07/kimber-warrior.html http://ns1.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=99766

Your definition of toy is too limited.
Your definition of a gun is wrong.
That's just....ridiculous.
I have one too except in stainless. I actually bought the blued first but the mag release was really stiff then it locked up took it back the shop I bought it from they got it working so I left. On at my house the entire mag release fell out of the it. I was pissed to say the least went back to the gun shop they gave me the stainless in exchange. Now i just need to buy a set of night sights for it.
Actually my mag release fell out too, but it turned out that the screw just hadn't been completely turned properly so after the first couple mag changes it worked itself back in.
For that much money something like that is unacceptable in my book. For the thousands I've spent at that gun shop they treat me really well, and I enjoy talking to the owner. They took it apologized for the inconvenience and gave me the stainless version. I don't blame them in anyway and I know its not their fault, I was just unhappy with Kimber. The replacement shoots great and I carry it all the time.
edit: A piece actually snapped in mine that caused it to fall out and I didn't want to wait for replacement parts.
