Wanting to game but motion sickness :(

I’m new to gaming and am looking for suggestions. Unfortunately there’s a lot I can’t play because I get motion sick VERY easily. I can’t do any first person games or games with a lot of movement, which sucks because it really limits what I CAN play.

I tried stardew valley today and really like it. I’ve also played Civ and enjoy it a lot. I like the sims, animal crossing, etc. I’ve played undertale but wasn’t that into it.

Any suggestions for easy, top-down games to try, preferably with minimal combat?

TIA

As someone who has dealt with motion sickness here is a few tips that worked wonders for me:

Motion Blur: OFF (in every possible game that has it)

FOV: >90 (usually anything below 90 is a nightmare for my eyes)

Depth of Field: OFF (your mileage may vary, but it helped me)

When it comes to games, I don't know what to tell you. I saw this and just felt like hopping in to drop some advice since this is an issue for me too.

It also helps to know what kind of games can set it off and when you play those only part them for small periods with adequate downtime before picking them up again. Because if you wait till you get start feeling sick to stop, it's already too late. Nothing stops my motion sickness completely but these tips do help.

Maybe Ace Attorney games - basically Visual novels where you take an active part in finding contradictions to solve the mystery. All you look at generally is a character and background.

Va-11 hall-a: the game is a bit niche but it's a nice novel based game in a cyberpunk world where you play as a bartender and you experience the world through your clients. It's overall great vibes.

OneShot: it's a nice topdown puzzle game about a cat finding a lightbulb. Now she wants to return it while talking to the player directly.

Hope these two kight interest you.

I suffered from this too but then someone suggested the sea sickness bands. Like sweat bands with a plastic button in and they helped me be able to play a lot more games.

Look for games with what I call Single Screen Levels. Those are games where the camera only moves when you get to the end of the screen. Stuff like Metroid games or Unraveled or Trine. They're largely puzzle platformers and such, but you get some action without having screen movement.

I'd also suggest smaller screens with higher frame rates. Low fps and refresh rates create higher motion sickness.

Assuming you’re on a Switch from Animal Crossing, I’ve heard really good things about Jurassic World Evolution for something more Civ-adjacent. Have you also tried Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Very approachable (but long) tactical RPG. The Switch also has a great selection of classic Final Fantasy games like VII and IX with modern quality of life updates. All the action there is turn-based so there won’t be any sudden camera movements.

Farther afield, but have you tried visual novel games like the Ace Attorney series (goofy murder mysteries), or the choose-your-own-adventure-style games like Telltale’s games (usually licensed like Walking Dead or Borderlands), Life Is Strange (supernatural teen dramas), or Until Dawn (PS-exclusive interactive slasher film)?

The choose-your-own-adventure-style games will have more camera movement than the visual novels like Ace Attorney, but action is minimal with combat usually being a single button press, and the camera won’t be swinging around like in an FPS. I especially enjoyed Telltale’s Tales From The Borderlands as someone who can’t play the proper Borderlands games due to motion sickness.

Openrct2 or if you want Something more modern Looking, parkitect are both fantastic isometric simulation games. Highly recommend both!

May or may not help you, but in first person type games, try turning motion blur off in settings if the game has it.

Motion blur makes me feel awful, but without it I'm fine.

Into the Breach is probably the best top down game ever made. While it may not fit the easy and minimal combat (90% is combat) the mechanics of the game are in a league of its own. Basically large bugs attack buildings and you have robots to defend them. The thing that makes it great is that the bugs telegraph their moves and your job is to disrupt them by moving them around. You can make them attack empty air, attack each other or tank shots with your robots to defend the cities. Each round is a puzzle to solve. Try it out you won't regret it.

For motion sickness, as someone who is also easily triggered I can recommend doing this:

- Check FOV. A higher FOV can often reduce motion sickness, BUT an FOV that's too high can also trigger it.

- Experiment with different control schemes. I've found many first-person-shooters or action games that make me throw up within less than an hour when played with a controller don't quite trigger me if I play with a mouse+kb, or they take much longer.

- When playing games that trigger you, be mindful of parts of the screen that are static or relatively so. The UI is one thing, the crosshair can also help. I played through all Dishonored games with my weapon drawn because by focusing on the character's arms and weapon I was able to ward off motion sickness.

- Play in short spurts. Stop playing as soon as you start feeling sick. Don't wait until it gets bad. By stopping when you start feeling ill you can keep your brain from associating the sickness with the game itself, and usually you'll be able to play in longer spurts each time.

That's basically how I handle it. I can't play EVERYTHING but most games I want to play I can, even if initially they trigger my motion sickness. That said, since you say you enjoyed stardew valley, a relatively underrated game in that style I love is Graveyard Keeper. Other games you might like include Rimworld and Factorio. Also, dunno if you like arpgs, but Hades is amazing.

Anyone has experience how VR headset affects motion sickness in FP games? Does it help or makes it worse?
