I'm looking for a cheap setup to trigger drum samples though a VST. Any guidance?

Question

I'm currently using an Alesis Nitromesh kit with a laptop (8 gigs of RAM) and an M-Audio interface. I get 3 milliseconds of latency on this setup and I hate how it feels. It's like being drunk. I'm looking to get the cheapest setup possible that would lower my latency. Would the answer be a better interface? Is there an affordable tower that I could get that would work better? I'd love to hear some input on what you guys use, especially the ones of you on a budget.

Where do you get the reading of 3ms? If you truly had a latency of 3ms from hitting the head to hearing the sound you would not notice it at all. If the reading comes from somewhere inside a software forget about it, because those values are not reliable. They do not take the signal chain after the software into account. Generally, any true latency below 10ms is not noticed by our brain. 3ms of latency are the equivalent of sound travelling 1m through air.

How is your Alesis connected to your PC? What PC are you using? The amount of RAM is not really relevant as long as it is enough, there are a lot of other factors influencing latency.

I set my interface to 3 ms and my daw shows the same so I figured that would be what I was getting. It's an m-audio fast track c400.

Like I said, any latency reported on screen is not an accurate representation of reality, so forget about that number.

Have you tried connecting the Alesis module directly to your PC via USB and Monitor the sound through the Alesis?

(3ms is negligible.) Are you monitoring your PC sound or interface? You should monitor from the interface. Monitoring from PC will often show a lag.

I usually monitor out of the headphone jack on the front of the interface.

Dang. Then that's not it. Good luck.
