Sound options..

In the audio options there's a setting to choose whether your setup is headphones, 2 speakers, 5.1, etc.. I tried setting it to headphones but it keeps reverting to '2 speakers' after going back.. does everyone else have this issue? Is there a console cmd for it?

Related problem: when a map loading, all other applications(skype/foobar) become very "quiet"(the volume decreases). How to fix this?

This is a setting in windows and not in CSGO. Right click the speaker icon on the bottom right corner in the task bar -> Playback Device -> Communication and than click "Do nothing". Hope it helps!

I played with the config files, console, and DiffUtils for a bit, and here is what I came up with:

  • The relevant cvar, or client variable, is "windows_speaker_config". It can be found in config.cfg

  • It is set to 4 for two speakers, and 3 for quad speakers.

  • The headphone option as it is is entirely broken. In the console, when you try to set it to headphones, you get:

Speaker configuration has been changed to headphone.
Speaker configuration has been changed to stereo speaker.

  • Setting windows_speaker_config from the console makes no audible difference, so I assume that it defaults back. The game doesn't report that it has written to config when you change it, so I don't think it actually changes.

TL;DR No headphones.

Does anyone have a solution to this? Been bothering me too

Saw a little guide a few days ago that mentioned people were having trouble with this.

Perhaps create a keybind to set the appropriate cvars, then just tap that every once in a while? Until Valve fixes the underlying problem, this seems like the only solution.

Same here. Somebody somewhere suggested to change it to 4 speakers instead. It seems a little bit better, bit it still doesn't sound right to me.

Apparently it's a bug dealing with switching maps on a server. AFAIK until they fix it you have to go into the game options and change it back yourself on every map switch.

No.. you are unable to set it to 'Headphones' and have it stick.

actually the same bug exists and has existed in the dota 2 beta for a while now. i dont think it is too high on valves list to fix unfortunately.
