Question about re-homing pet birds (Lorikeet, Budgie, Cockatiel)

no politics

I'm hoping someone can give me advice on re-homing pet birds. My elderly father has a Rainbow Lorikeet, a Budgie, and a Cockatiel and he's no longer able to care for them. I want to find them good homes but not sure how.

The Lorikeet is very accustomed to humans - can shake hands, talk, etc. Funny little girl. She was once a non-cage bird but recently has been kept in a cage. The other 2 are cage birds only.

Is there a bird community I could tap into to find a new home? Or do I talk to a pet shop? RSPCA maybe? I have no idea where to start.

How old are they?

Cockatiels can live for 20 years and rainbow dickheads can live for 30. Whoever takes them on will need to know how old they are so they know what kind of commitment they're signing up for.

I know there are big bird communities on facebook who could help you rehome the birds.

Check out the Parrot Rescue Centre. They've got a bunch of information on their website and you can rehome birds through them.

Where are you located? Do you have pictures? How old are they?

Dad is on South Coast NSW. No pics sorry. I would guess the Lorikeet is 3 or 4, Budgie is probably 5, no idea on the Cockatiel. They're all "rescues" of sort, dad looked after them for other people and ended up with them permanently.

Old post, but did you fund a suitable home at all? Thanks

It became an annoying story tbh. Dad wouldn't let them go, so he still has them and I've organized people to go around and clean/feed. But we have homes lined up... and I'm hoping he's able to part with them soon.

Nah that's completely understandable, I have birds myself (lorikeets and an eclectus) the bond you form with them is incredibly strong.

As long as they are been fed and looked after and not been neglected.

If the time comes and your other homes fall through I would definitely be interested to join our lorries

Honestly I'm not happy with their situation. The Lorikeet is an absolutely delightful girl, so playful and sociable. She used to have a lot more people to interact with and keep her life rich.

I may hit you up if I can't sort something, I just want them to have good lives. Thanks for the offer!

Yeah I also get that, at what point does it become cruel to keep her isolated which then brings on the depression. Lorikeets are absolutely all social they need people to interact with. They are just little balls of energy fed on nectar haha.

I'm more than happy to help if the time comes, I'll show you videos and pictures of our lorries if you have any concerns. We are currently hand raising our first red collared lorikeet but we have a rainbow and scaleys and now the red collared so she would definitely have others to play with and us and our kids Ti interact with.

Hope it works out for them

Are you looking to keep them together? Or happy to break them up?

I am not sure tbh. The cocky and budgie are roomies so probably stay as a pair.

Where are you located? There are bird rescues all over the country that will take them and either permanently house, or rehome.

No bird should be permanently caged either.
