Any suggestions for a consumer /cheap NAS server?

Hello,

are there any suggestions for a consumer NAS?

I own a really old zyxel NSA325v2, which won't get any updates and the ancient samba isnt Able to work with cussren cmb2 / smb3 protocols.

Right now I'd like to replace it with a new NAS. It should be

  • power-efficient
  • has a raid for data protection
  • 2-3 TB available storage space

I thought about buying a Synology 220j or something vom QNAP.

Another question:
The harddrives in my old NAS would still be sufficient, and the SMART saye they are still OK. Woulf you replace the 7 or 8 years old WD red with newer ones?

Synology is a good choice. Your existing drives should be fine.

Phase out the WD drives ASAP. The main issue here is that if they are in Raid and if one fails you are more likely to have a second fail during rebuild.

As far as an inexpensive NAS, if you want to hack a bit you could grab a Radxa Taco which is a 5 drive system based off of a raspberry pi + carrier board. If you want a plug and play system you can check out the Asus DriveStor. There is a version running ARM which has disk spin-down to save $ and also has a decent GUI for all the normal things you'd want to do. QNAP is also OK if you want to spend more $$ for more features.
