just the same old new year

"a new year, a new beginning"

cheers clatter the midnight air

fireworks blaze the dim blue sky

/

then the smoke comes raining down

misting yet another year away

/

we bid a dreaded year good-bye

while the night hides the mirror's sight

of the soon resting resolutions

/

indeed, a new year, a new beginning

a new tomorrow, a new way to claim

that this year will be more than just the same

Oh, hi there; didn't see you! You've reached r/OCPoetry. This is a workshop site where you can share, read, and talk about eachother's poetry & etc. To post your own poems, you need to give feedback to 2 other writers. If you aren't trying to share, you're encouraged to give feedback, but aren't required. Try to be nice, questioning, and specific. If you can't do that - eat a cabbage and come back later. Try to give feedback to a writer without any feedback. Lastly, read our feedback guide , other writer's comments, or this author’s feedback links. i really liked this. you really did well with the imagery. i really liked the lines "then the smoke comes raining down-misting yet another year away". the ending too i got the message that everyone gets excited for a new year but its always the same. for some reason new years give hope for something better for seemingly no reason at all other than its new. most resolutions die before the year actually begins

I love the style/formatting you’ve used. All lowercase and limited punctuation adds to the nonchalance of talking about the new year as a phenomenon.

I particularly like “soon resting resolutions” and the last stanza is a powerful way to round off.

As someone else mentioned, I love the inagery. My favorite is the image of the night making it hard to take a good look at yourself in the mirror as you make these promises. I wonder if the poem could benefit from having one running metaphor, though? Like maybe incorporating the smoke covering the mirror? Or the blackness rushing in to take the smoke's place as the fireworks stop lighting up the sky? Idk.
I also feel like the line about bidding another year goodbye could be removed to as the reader already knows that you're saying goodbye to a year from earlier lines in the poem.
However, I do really like the ending line about the new year being a new way to claim that things will change every time it rolls around.
Overall I really love the premise of this poem : )
