Never understood how some Americans can reconcile their love for confederacy and patriotic feelings to the US
Because heinous, racist crimes in the name of imperialism were committed under that flag too. Even as they were whipping the confederates asses.
Confederates argued about facets of the Declaration of Independence all while claiming they were the "real americans". Its not surprising that neo-confederates disregard Lincoln's values of a civic nation while claiming they are the "real americans". After the election of Woodrow Wilson, White Supremacists believed their values were redeemed and they recaptured the soul of America. America has always been an actively racist empire. And neo-confederates choose to see those values in the flag over America's history as a civic free democracy. The American flag will always have to grapple with that duality.
Of course, everyone puts his own meaning in different symbols. Probably for many US flag is the symbol of racism or whatnot. But how can they fly them together? Confederacy fought Union, Union humiliated confederacy. You cannot simultaneously be a patriot of nazi Germany and French Republic. They don't just represent opposite ideas, they fought each other and hate each other.
Because they never stopped claiming the american lineage. They think they're the real "Rome". That they have or will achieve "Redemption".
As far as I know, much of their rhetoric during the war was about breaking all ties to America, but lost cause messed it all up. So you most certainly right
they fought each other and hate each other
I mean, the US fought Japan in World War II, but now we read manga and play Nintendo games. But then, we were fighting the Confederacy for the entire duration of its existence, so I guess you have a point...
Sup with Woodrow, asking for a friend.
He was one of our worst Presidents of all time. With respect to this particular discussion, while a practicing historian with Princeton he was one of the prime pushers of the Lost Cause myth. Every time you hear, “It was about states rights!” or “They were just defending their homes!” just say a quiet, “Thanks Woodrow.” He segregated the Federal government and appointed a head of the Navy who proceeded to Jim Crow the place up. He screened Birth of a Nation in the Whitehouse, the movie basically being Klu Klux Klan propaganda. Oh, and he was a strong supporter of colonial self determination, if they were white.
Beyond just being a racist prick he’s also the source of Interventionism as US policy. Treated Central and South America as if they were the US’s personal playground. Gave us the Immigration Act of 1918, the Espionage and Sedition Acts, which combined were egregious enough that the ACLU formed as a result.
If you’re making a list of the top five worst Presidents in US history and Wilson’s not on it… you’re just wrong.
Right as I read the KKK in your reply it sparked that memory of that turd. So many bad Execs up there.
E thank you!
Woodrow Wilson is from Augusta, Georgia. His father was a minister for the Presbyterian church. When the civil war started, his father became a founder of the Southern Presbyterian church when the church split over slavery and the Southern states seceding.
His father treated Confederate wounded in the church.
After Woodrow graduated from College he gained acclaim by writing a chapter on the history of the Civil War that became part of the Lost Cause Narrative that proliferated amongst Southern Elite. He rode that acclaim to an administrative position at Princeton. From their he became the Governor of NJ as a Democratic party member.
He won the 1912 Presidential election as a Democrat breaking a long streak of Republican dominance of the Executive branch. Southern Democrats were associated with the plantocracy and following emancipation and citizenship of slaves, The Republican party outcompetes them. With Jim Crow choking off black voter particiaption, The Democratic party became insurgent.
The Southern Democrats saw Wilson's election as southern Redemption as the lost cause narrative he helped to popularize became the preferred narrative to the origin and ending of the civil war. Wilson's writing inspired the screenplay "The Birth Of A Nation" which depicted Southern Klansmen terrorizing black citizens and eventually reconciling with Northern counterparts.
The movie was being boycotted and subject to censorship laws concerning disturbing the peace. But was able to proliferate following a special screening at the Supreme Court and Wilson's White House. Wilson personally and publicly endorsed the film.
Wilson reintroduced and normalized segregation in federal buildings and slowed or outrighted stoppes hiring Black workers in Federal administrative positions.
The Birth of A Nation and Southern Democrats rhetoric popularized the Klan once again and militias like it. The Red Summer of 1919 proliferated under Wilson. In which countless Neighborhoods, towns and cities experienced race based riots and massacres in which black historic neighborhoods were terrorized and razed because they were seen as competition to white business. There were also jingoistic riots and intimidation of foreign immigrants who didn't speak English because of the harsh war powers legislation that gave the Federal Government to squelch dissent of the war. American white supremacists began terrorizing non english speaking communities, forcing them to adopt English language and american customs and food. Germans suffered the most, but also jewish, east european, chinese and Japanese immigrants also suffered during this time.
In 1912, he invaded Haiti to re-establish American influence on Central and South America. He presided over the massacre of Haitians and installation of puppet Government.
He created a race based Hiearchy for his would be predecessor to the UN. which amongst other things limited Sovereignty for non European nations like Japan and Vietnam. This would be part of the tension that would lead to WWII.
I recommend the book
Union: The Struggle to Forge the Story of United States Nationhood By Colin Woodard
Thats where I got most the details. But also this video does a good job running down all the ways he empowered White Supremacists and perpetuated US imperialism.
Holy cow, I hope that was a copypasta! Thank you for writing all that up! It's these little history nuggets that make it hard to quit this damn site. I'm slowly plowing my way through all those paragraphs. I didn't know he started banana republics.
"America has always been an actively racist empire" yeah no, it's not currently an empire, because it has no emperor (I miss Norton so much) and it currently isn't racist
"America has always been an actively racist empire"- People who don't do anything to help fix real problems like poverty on Native reservations.
Me too.
Simple, just have Patriotism for the parts of the US that don’t contradict the slaver ideology and ignore the 70% of it that does
Sounds like a recipe for a disgusting cocktail. It would probably be called 'Inbred Slaver'
Just like the Bible! God says homosexuals are going to hell, never mind about divorce... 😉
If a Christian says that gay people are immoral and bad, then they are clearly missing the point of Christianity as a whole.
Good bot
Ain't the only thing the amoral, sadistic Christian god said. There's all the fun of Exodus 21 to wallow throught. That's where god laid down his rules on keeping people as property. I beat you hard enough that you didn't die for two days but died of the beating on the third? I'm still good in the eyes of their amoral god.
It's simple, the part of the 'patriotism' of the US are the parts that don't really contradict with the values of the confederacy. The sessession war was just a 'blunder' in this mindset, and therefore, everything that could be considered a 'good thing' about the US, specially recently (the struggle for equality and freedom and so forth, guarenteeing now rights for minorities and whatnot) is a deterioration of what "the US stands for". So, by joining the simbols of the US and the confederacy, they are making a stand for the 'true values of the US' (in their mindset) that is plagued by 'degeneracy' so it must be corrected by something that really exemplifies it (like the confederacy). So that 'families, comunities', how a society must function, the values it must uphold etc. Are all in line with the 'confederate way of things' that suposedly 'held true to the real american values'.
I got this part. But if they love confederacy so much, why don't they think of this as a humiliation to their beloved Bobby Lee or whatnot. I would consider it as such.
I think the reasoning would be that 'lee and the confederates were the true american patriots of their time', and the reasoning goes on from there to then join the two flags.
As someone from the south. A lot of people genuinely don’t know a lot about what the flag means to them. It’s a place with dislike of outsiders. The flag gives them identity. Not justifying but I think there’s a lot more ignorance.
Because they don't actually have patriotic feelings for the US. They have jingoistic feelings for a white Christian ethnostate.
Because self-delusion is and always has been a core tenant of the confederacy/ the antebellum south.
The south reconciled their obviously evil traits by simply lying to themselves that it was good actually, and they were fighting for the right things. That sense of self delusion survives to this day.
Projection, arrogance, self-denial, etc. They never can give a straight answer and perpetually deny it's a dog whistle. There was a point in history where a lot of people waved it in ignorant, naïve, regional pride but that excuse has been long over now that most people have immediate access to historical fact and context.
A solid hundred years of Lost Cause revisionism and anti-intellectualism.
They don't identify as Americans, they gave it up 160 years ago and got forced back in by Uncle Sam, but some never repatriated. They're like the high school guys that almost won the big game and now can't let it go
Shitty state educational systems.

People like her are the reason society hasn't collapsed yet

Fuck that bitch ass flag.
1st Minnesota Regiment would be proud of her
Uncle Billy would be proud.
Uncle Billy is slightly disappointed she didn't light the truck on fire.
Maybe she left her torch at home that day.
Can confirm, I was left on the nightstand.
Ad Victoriam
EX MACHINA
Immensely based
Now THAT is a Patriot if I’ve ever seen one🇺🇸
What a legend
Tbh I'd pull Old Glory off the back instead
Let the traitor bastard look honest instead of dressing it in a liar's pretense of patriotism
Exactly how dare they have Old Girly next to the banner of traitors.
4 years of heritage
And the thing came down like wet toilet paper.
FUCK YEAH! That said might not be too smart considering you run the risk of getting popped by a stupid hick. Similar story from a few years back: Here
She’s a damned patriot.
Based.
Psa - don't do this. She is lucky it timed out well. That truck starts moving and you're fucked.
Or, you know. you get into legal trouble... Just don't do this in general. Dumbfucks will be dumbfucks

Not to mention that the numbnuts driving it is probably packing heat…
You'll notice it doesn't actually belong to the guy driving. It's in a tow bed, the driver doesn't give a fuck, he's just making a delivery.
Hey I remember that, Uncle Billy must still be proud of her
Based.
Away down south in the land of traitors
Rattlesnakes and alligators!
Right away! Come away!
How dare that truck driver fly the banner of traitors next to the American flag
that American flag is also in tatters and should be retired
How much you wanna bet that traitorous asshole ripped it up himelf to make it look worn?
Na, just a cheap ass nylon flag they never took down. On a truck, never properly cared for, a cheap flag is only gonna look decent for a few months, less if you have strong sun.
I'll bet $40 on that
US flag code boyz in the house.

Wish she had grabbed both. Fold up and burn that poor American flag.
And stuff that traitors' rag down the nearest sewer
