2008 BMW X3 pop noise from hood then white smoke
I was idling in a parking lot for about 10 minutes when I heard a pop from the engine then white smoke came billowing out of the hood.
I turned the engine off immediately and let it sit for about 20 minutes until it cooled down (pretty cold day in Ontario) and stopped smoking. It started up like normal but the coolant light had turned on. I drove it 5 minutes home while keeping an eye on the temp gauge, which sat square in the middle the whole time.
The car had basically been sitting for the past four months but I had started driving it regularly 3 days ago after replacing the battery.
Any advice on what might’ve happened and what I should do/ look for?

Check your coolant level. That sounds like a heater hose let loose. Many temp gauges will not read correctly if they are dry.
This.
Hey so I checked the now and yeah the coolant level looks basically empty. And it seems like it was leaking as the engine has wet spots all around. Under the car you can see it too plus on the ground. I can’t tell if a hose got loose or if it’s something else but ill try and take a better look later.
Based on this, would you know how bad of a fix is this? And do you know what I should expect in terms of price?
If it were US domestic car or even a Japanese car I would say cheap and easy. With it being a BMW I have no idea. I’m just not familiar with servicing them.
