[News] Upcoming sunscreen and makeup primer releases, January/February 2022: Cezanne, Haku, Coffret d’Or, Coppertone, matsukiyo LAB, Benefique

News

I just realized that I accidentally pasted this post over what was originally here, and that I don’t have the original post on hand 😱😱😱 Here’s a reconstruction of the original post, probably with additional information that’s come out since. Please excuse any typos, as I’m currently experiencing (probably/hopefully temporary) limited mobility in one hand.

  • Cezanne UV Tone Up Base will add a pink version to its line-up in late January 2022. Both the existing product and the new pink version are SPF 50+ PA++++ and only contain inorganic (mineral) filters. 748 JPY for 30 g. Press release here. → Moved to its own post with additional information here.
  • Haku Melanofocus UV was released on January 21. From Shiseido’s high-end drugstore brand focused on brightening. SPF 50+ PA++++, 5280 JPY for 45 mL. Pink beige, fragrance free, quasi-drug containing Potassium Methoxysalicylate aka 4MSK and m-Tranexamic Acid. Product info in English on RatzillaCosme.
  • Kanebo’s makeup brand Coffret d’Or released three color-correcting versions of their makeup primer Coffret d’Or Skin Illusion Primer UV as Coffret d’Or Skin Illusion Primer UV n in Green, Pink, and Lavender on January 22. Fragrance free, SPF 50 PA+++ (not SPF 50+ like the original primer), 3080 JPY for 25 mL. Landing page on official website here.
  • In Japan, Coppertone products are made by Taisho Pharmaceutical and are not the same thing as Coppertone in the US. They’ve discontinued a number of products and released a new color-correcting line on February 1: Coppertone Secret Change UV in Marshmallow White, Yellow Velvet, Misty Green, Royal Blue, and Sweet Rose. All five versions are SPF 50+ PA++++, water resistant, and 990 JPY for 30 g. The Marshmallow White version is also alcohol free, and I think they’re all fragrance free. Product info in English on RatzillaCosme, but note that it’s “Misty Green,” not “Mint Green.” Also on the official brand page here.
  • Coppertone also released a powder in the same line, Coppertone Shiny Smooth Powder. It’s meant to reduce any excess sebum, presumably over their sunscreens. I can’t tell whether it’s loose or pressed. SPF 3 (which sounds a lot more representative of what sunscreen powders can probably realistically do in real life use), 990 JPY for 5 g.
  • The drugstore chain MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. released two sunscreens from their private brand matsukiyo LAB, matsukiyo LAB FreeLab+ UV Essence and matsukiyo LAB FreeLab+ UV Gel, on February 11. Both are quasi-drugs containing Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate; the Essence also contains Niacinamide and is marketed for anti-aging (fine lines and hyperpigmentation), and the Gel also contains Heparinoids and is marketed for irritated skin. Essence: Cocokara Fine listing (with full ingredient list), packaging photos. Gel: Cocokara Fine listing (with full ingredient list), packaging photos. Both are also on Matsumotokiyoshi’s online store (with partial ingredient lists) and each chain’s storefronts elsewhere. Manufactured by Toyo Shinyaku.
  • Shiseido released Benefique Clear UV Essence UV & IR from one of their prestige skincare brands on February 21. Blocks UV and “IR” (infrared) rays including long UVA rays, “Floral Floral” fragrance, for face and body, protects from pollutants etc. (but this is a feature that seems to be in most new sunscreens). SPF 50+ PA++++, 3850 JPY for 50 mL. Product info in English on RatzillaCosme.
  • Also from Benefique, Benefique Holistic White UV will be released on March 21. This one is a quasi-medication meant for brightening by preventing hyperpigmentation witth Niacinamide. Tone-up effect, “Floral Floral” fragrance. SPF 50+ PA++++, 6600 JPY for 50 mL. Not on the official product catalogue yet. ETA that it’s now on the official product catalogue here.
