If you had just started a new job and a friend began showing interest in a similar/same job once you mentioned it, how would you feel about it? Would you assume they’re copying you?

You're grown up (or at least grown up enough to have a job) - they're not copying you, they're wanting a piece of the "success" you're having.

You aren't children, so it's not like someone copying you on the playground

I would just assume that you've opened your friend's eyes. Maybe they didn't really know what they wanted to do until they heard about your new job and then they realised that maybe the would enjoy that too.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. You can't copyright an entire industry

I would feel pretty awesome as lots of places offer referral bonuses. Like if I recommend a friend of mine and they get hired and stay for like...6 months or something I get $500.

Maybe they are anxious about changing. Perhaps they see your success and feel more comfortable taking the leap? You might be a positive example to them.

As a friend...you shouldn't feel defensive that they are following your path. Learn to understand before rejection
