Breakfast

Breakfast

I made breakfast for you –

I swirled the yoghurt on the plate

And topped it with garlic oil;

I wanted it to be middle class.

I made breakfast for you,

This morning, in the kitchen –

I dropped the yoghurt tub and blamed the cat,

By mistake, but I blamed her –

I held onto that,

That you told me you liked heuvos rancheros

But who doesn’t like spicy eggs, anymore.

I can do better than this.

You sent me a short recipe video;

I look back through our messages

And let the little clip play on repeat,

Afraid of adding too much oil to it.

Water and oil don’t mix – I laugh,

And then I eat shame

Because somebody wrote that before I did.

I’d google poems with the same exact phrase

But I am trying to be less critical.

There is vulnerability in following a recipe,

Constantly checking and rechecking

For such miserable validation

In a single garlic clove, chopped.
