Pick the right Korean joystick (Crown) for 2D action games and shmups... advise ???
Hi happy fellows!
I have a question for specialists of the Korean Joysticks.
Before asking my question, I saw tons of advises on reddit, Forums, saw many youtube video from specialist…. I know that you need to try different grommet in order to find “THE one” made for you
I’m a fan of Japanese joysticks (Japanese joysticks are now on the market for a llooonng time now).
I’m open minded and I want to try seriously a Korean Joystick.
First, what kind of video games, I play:
- arcade games (2D mostly),
- action games,
- shmups
-3D fighting games (5 % of my time)
So I’m not an aficionados of Tekken and other 3D fighting games (I like 2D games, like street fighter, etc.). I spend my time MOSTLY with action games and Shmups.
I want to buy a Crown joysticks (that’s the easiest brand I can get near me…).
I LIKE a joystick with a short throw and a medium / high tension. (I like seimitsu joystick…) .
Now I don’t know what model to pick , with crown wide range of joysticks :
*CWL-309MJ
*CWL-309 New HelpMe
*CWL-309MJ BENYLIS
* SDL-301-DX
*CWL-303MJ-DX-ST35 Crazy Dongpal
I saw the comments on BENYLIS or Crazy Dongpal : some say that those joysticks don’t “reinvent the wheel” etc. I'ma at lost right now .....

I think the first big thing is the type of collar you get. I think the MJ in the code is the designation of the short collar sticks(the ones you can use with a top plate cut for a Japanese stick.) If you have a top plate cut for a Japanese style stick, you will need a MJ lever unless you are going to modify your plate or buy a replacement with a joystick hole cut for the larger collar.
I have the MJ Benylis in mine. It comes with the blue grommet which is pretty stiff, but if you are used to Seimitsu sticks, it should be comparable. I actually just installed the purple grommet in mine last night which is the next softest, which puts it somewhere between the Sanwa and Seimitsu sticks I have used in the past, in terms of stiffness.
I think the Help Me version comes with the purple grommet, but I also think the actuator(I think that is what it's called, the part that comes into contact with the switches) may be different as well. I can't speak for this as I don't have one, just going off of info I put together while I was in the market.
Honestly, the parts for them are so cheap, and they easy enough to swap out, I'd say go with the one that sounds the most like what you are looking for or wanting, and go from there as far as choosing a different grommet or actuator.
I tried a Korean stick on a whim, and ended up loving them. People will try to pigeonhole them into "being for 3D fighters," but I mostly use mine for 2D fighters. They are not better or worse than Japanese sticks, they are just different. It will take some time to adjust to the differences. But, as I said, I love mine. Different strokes and whatnot.
