One of my favorite players ever watch play but I still think hitting 50 home runs with the worst thing that ever happened to him. After that season he Would swing so hard at everything that he screwed himself into the batters box

I don’t think it was the 50 HR season because he followed that up with a year just as good. I think it was he just got complacent following those 2 stellar seasons and felt entering a contract year his next contract was going to be massive and he was set.

At that point when he signed that big contract he’d been playing what for most people is a whole career from the time he was 19 years old he may have been worn out. I wouldn’t call him lazy like that.

I've always felt it's how he declined. Signed a major deal in a major market only to show up to camp massively overweight and a shell of his former self.

It may play a small factor but the problem with that idea is Vizquel is dealing with DV allegations as well as now sexual assault allegations and he is garnering more support.
The biggest issue is the sudden drop in production. I mean from ‘96-‘06 he averaged .267/.345/.505 while averaging 30+ HR and 90+ RBI.
From ‘07-‘12 his numbers plummeted to .214/.314/.420 and averaged 15 HR and 45 RBI. Yes he lost a lot of playing time which accounts for the depressed HR and RBI numbers but his hitting declined in an instant.
I do wonder if there is steroid speculation surrounding Andruw. I mean it’s weird because his peak was right when baseball began testing(2003), however his drop off coincides with the Mitchell investigation into steroid use in baseball and when baseball really started taking steroid use very seriously. EDIT: I am not saying Andruw did or didn’t just speculating if there is a contingent that wonders this.

Murphy should be a hall of famer. Andruw Jones? I don’t have a strong feeling about it either way. His defense may swing it, but he was a walking strikeout.

That was definitely the knock on Dale Murphy as well. But when you only have, say, Ozzie Virgil backing you up, you’re not getting anything to hit.
