For those of you suffering with the heat, good news: The southerly will be arriving in Sydney shortly.

The southerly change just arrived down the coast quite a bit earlier than expected, just about blowing me off the jetty and into the water about 15 minutes ago (10:15pm).

temperature has already dropped by about 10 degrees and it is gloriously cool - but she's a bit fuckin' windy.

Update: 10:55pm - looks like it's hit Kiama and is on its way up the coast :)

BoM says it will drop from 29 to 24 degrees between 3am and 4am. I think that's when we're getting it. We've got a while to go yet!

Jesus H Christ - 29 degrees at 3am should be illegal.

Remember one time it was 39 degrees at 2am and the change came through about 6am. Weather report that night mentioned the high of 41 was recorded about midnight and the low of 21 was recorded at 1pm.

This was in Adelaide not Sydney though

Little tip, on the BOM radar blue arrows tell up to date wind direction blue numbers tell speed and red numbers tell temperature. Easiest way to track a southerly and its effect.

I have screens and the garden door is also always closed. But I'm getting absolutely hammered each night by mosquitoes inside my bedroom. Even set up a UV light that does nothing

Absolutely a thing, as is getting up at sparrows fart to get the right combo of tides and such.

Light can be a great way to lure some fish - usually with a bright light lowered into the water in one spot, you can attract a bunch of tiny fish, which attracts bigger fish and so on. Squid absolutely love investigating bright lights at night.

Is (presumably fishing?) off a jetty in the dark of night a thing? It sounds quite pleasant, but I wonder about logistical issues such as the absence of light by which to see.

There's an overhead light by the boat ramp, and I've got a head torch if it gets too dark - but yes, night fishing is most definitely a thing :)

I landed a 49cm Trevally for my dinner tonight just before the weather arrived, so I've got that to look forward to tonight :)

BOM saying the southerly is only travelling at 7km/h and will hit Sydney at 5am. Praying it’s sooner 🙏

BOM radar is showing that the southerly winds have hit Holsworthy and the airport... Won't be long for the rest of Sydney now :)

It's dropped 2c in the last 40ish minutes here in Wollongong, went to 7/11 for slushies and ice cream, the breeze was FINALLY starting to hit from the right place.

Might be able to not sleep with the fan on full blast tonight. 27c outside and inside my thermometer is picking up 29c. Have opened every bloody window so when it hits, the place cools off

I know its just a simple fact of earth that the southern hemisphere is the opposite season to the north, but its still cool to think its freezing snowing here and burning hell down there. What is a southerly?

In Sydney, when the weather is hot and foul in summer, the hot weather is usually ended in quite a dramatic fashion by a huge blast of cold weather that arrives as a wind from the south - hence, a southerly.

The southerly normally turns up in the late afternoon / early evening, and can drop the temperature more than 10 degrees C in just a few minutes.

It is blessed relief when it comes at the end of a long, hot spell :)

same, I never cease to find that amazing. The cold winds in Australia blow off the Antarctic ocean to the south. Extremely welcome when it's been hot.
