jsix: 700th commit!

Ok, I know all the big OS projects blow this out of the water, but I'm still pretty proud of reaching 700 commits on my solo OS project, jsix.

I didn't even realize this was going to be number 700, but it was a doozy - it's a bit of a reorg, so it touched almost every header file in the project. https://github.com/justinian/jsix/commit/4545256b49eba409814753baf4c6c8b59cdcffad

I hope you all are enjoying your projects as much as I've been enjoying this one!

hahah cool, congratulations

how do you start working on OS?

Thanks! This particular project started out because I wanted to experiment with UEFI, so I started with the bootloader. UEFI was a pretty easy way to get into it.

I see that you want to rewrite stuff in Zig. Nice move. I've been following Zig for quite some time now, and I'm confident these people are achieving something great.

Yeah, I really like how Andrew early on targeted the use case of replacing just some parts of a C codebase in Zig without disrupting the rest. I look forward to being able to do incremental replacement like that.

Currently the blocker on that is this issue, which means they don't actually support UEFI yet.

That looks like a bug, and hope this will get fixed soon.

I'm sure once the native compiler will be done, a lot of bugs will quickly disappear. This native compiler seems to be the main goal right now for Andrew, which is fair imho.

Totally! Doesn't really make sense to fix it in the current compiler when they're working on replacing it.

you can specify cpu capabilities with the -mcpu flag, so you can disable avx like so: -mcpu=baseline-avx-avx2 (you might also want to use a different starting cpu than baseline, put the wrong value there and Zig will suggest what cpu configs are avaliable for the target architecture)

Oh cool, thanks - I was getting around it by building in ReleaseSmall (I think?), but relying on that to not emit AVX felt hacky. But I'm also fine waiting for the new compiler and just watching what you guys put out until then. 😁

Very well done

It's amazing.

How you work with this huge project?

It's takes so long time to write from scratch... Good luck.

I hope your OS just make revolution in the world, and he replace major OS which we use nowadays...

change nasm by fasm - its make less executable files, and faster compilled
