Don't wait too long to change

NSFWSpoiler

I left my appliance on for a week and developed a hole. I went to the ER and had a CAT scan. No infection and blood work was good.

I will be using Tegaderm over the hole until I get skin barrier sheets from Hollister, including skin barrier sheets with silver alginate.

It hurts when touched.

I believe this needs stiches or a surgery. This looks very dangerous. I'd do more than bands and a paste.

I suggested a stitch or two to the ER doctor and he disagreed. He said it would damage it more to poke more holes. He wants it to heal naturally from the edges in.

I don’t think ER docs are best for diagnosing stoma problems. They simply don’t have the experience. I would see 1. an ostomy nurse, 2. a wound care nurse or 3. your surgeon. Pick the one you can see ASAP.

Yea I’d consult with your surgeon. A hole in your skin could get infected especially considering what’s going on around and on top of it.

There should be barrier strips or rings you can use to protect It until it heals completely.

Was there no pain up until you changed it? It seems like there should have been pain.

There was pain when output touched it. I also have a rashy area that would have pain when I moved. (I am bedbound so I don't move a lot. Just to sit up/lay down) I knew there was an inflamed area, I just didn't see the hole until a few days later when I changed the appliance again. By then the pain came in waves and I took acetaminophen which helped take the edge off the pain. I am pretty touch when it comes to pain. But the actual hole kinda scared me and my hubby.

Eeeek. Thanks for posting, it's good to be prepared.

How does this happen?

Stupidity and over-confidence. Totally my fault.

Wow, To be honest its rare a bag will last more than 5 days for me before they start to not look to clever or show like there going to leak. How did this not hurt like a mother ******? Acid burn though the skin or infection, but you say no infection, so this has to be a weak bit of skin killed by stomach Acid ?

I have just come off of a course of antibiotics due to a UTI from my indwelling Foley catheter. It may be that any infection was knocked out by the Augmentin antibiotic I took. I take a daily antibiotic, doxycycline, to keep UIT's down because of the catheter.

I am pretty stoic as a person. I know some stuff hurts.

I have been working on preventing the tape from being eroded by using extra adhesive and barrier rings. The appliance just kept working so I just changed the bags but not the baseplate. I waited too long.

Thank you for sharing the lesson and hope it is not too painful

It has made me re-think my supplies and I will be getting a baseplate that is designed for liquid output.

Good idea - I hope it heals well, best wishes

I'm sorry that happened to you. What caused that hole? I've been lucky to not have that happen to me because I change my bag every 9 days with no problems.

I think it was caused by my output sitting on my skin too long. I have liquid output hat is acidic and my skin is thin from my age. I think the acid just ate a hole in my skin. I need to empty my bag every 3 or 4 days or the liquid will eat through the barrier ring and get on my skin.

First of all, I hope this gets addressed and you end up okay. But, wow, I can't even think of how this happens. I change every 3-4 days.

Totally my fault and I intend to change every 3 to 4 days from now on.

I change once a week. How does not changing cause this?

2

I have liquid output that is acidic. The colon's job is to remove water and neutralize the acid. So the output stayed n my skin long enough to eat a hole through the skin.

No, I know how it works, I have an ileostomy, too. My skin is very bad due to me having to cut the wafer very large. I just didn’t realize it would eventually cause a hole. Mine has been like this for months. It just bleeds and is sore.

I am as old - 67 years old, and my skin is much thinner now. If you are a youngster, say, under 50, your skin may have more depth.

Maybe, I don't know. Good luck!
