The I Love You More Game

Poem

We used to always play the I love you more game

One-upping each other in a never-ending spiral

Sometimes I would let you win just for a moment

For it allowed me to see that special glow on your face

.

We used to always play the I love you more game

In which we gave absurd reasons as to why we deserved to win

Sometimes we would say our love was perfectly equal

For it would show that we fully cared for one another

.

We used to play the I love you more game

With reasons that became blander

Sometimes it felt like you didn’t mean it

For it held nothing but your beautiful eyes

.

We no longer play the I love you more game

And as much as I’d like for it to continue

The seemingly neverending game stopped

Because I won

so the subject was kept ambiguous, which led me to assume that they are a child (sometimes kids keep saying “i love you” to their parents and that is so sweet!), but then i only knew that the love was romantic, not storge, in the next stanza. Perhaps you could establish the subject clearer in the first stanza if it suits you, to not give Lolita vibes…

I have to say that this poem is like a mountain climb. The emotion gets more complex and hard as you keep reading. The final line would be the summit, “because I won”. The irony here is just heart-wrenching—i won, but you lost. Great ending.

This poem makes me think about this side of love I might have yet to understand which is cool, cos that's what poems should be about. :)

Oh this is so beautiful. I think the game stopped because the other person moved on and the narrator still kept loving them and hence won the game but lost the love.

I love where this poem winds up but I think the journey there needs a little more work. The use of the word “for” instead of “because” makes it seem like it’s trying too hard to be formal. I think the repetition of the first line of each stanza isn’t serving any purpose but rather breaks up the flow of the poem.

Really great topic! And very relatable.

I love how the context could be between parents and kids or even lovers or anyone else.

Great poem!

this is sweet and sad. i've never heard of the "i love you more game" but it sounds cute.

i like the repetition in the poem. it drives the point across.

favorite line: because i won. i assume that means u love him more. sweet but kind of sad

Fucking shit...This is so beautiful I almost cried.

Though I can not detect a rhyme scheme or a definite meter to the scale it is beautiful nevertheless. I am reminded of Charles Bukowski from your poem

Keep up the good work buddy.

I loved this. Reading every line, I felt like I knew where this was heading but there was nothing else to do but to read until the bittersweet end, just like a love that slowly but inevitably fades away. I can't change the words of your poem like you can't stop someone's love from dying out.

Bittersweet, soft, tender and tragic. Great poem all around.
