Seems to be some glitches when selecting folders
I'm running into an issue when I click on folders. In the footer, when I have a footer selected, I think it is supposed to tell me how many documents are in that folder. Sometimes this works. I click on Chapter 3 and it says 11 items. I have 11 scenes in Chapter 3, so that makes sense. I then click on Chapter 1 and it says 11 items still even though I have 4 scenes in Chapter 1. I click on Chapter 2 and it says 11 items still even though I have 7 scenes in Chapter 2. It just doesn't update.
But then I click on Chapter 5 and the footer changes to say 6 items, which makes sense because I have 6 scenes in Chapter 5. Then I click on Chapter 1, which has 4 scenes and which, just a moment ago, said 11 items in the footer when I had it selected, and it now says 6 items. Why are only Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 actually updating the footer when selected and all the other chapters just say the number of items from either Chapter 3 or Chapter 5, whichever I had selected last?
Also, I've been seeing documentation that suggests I should be able to see the word count for all the selected documents in the footer, but all I see is the number of items. In order to see the word counts of my chapters I have to go to the Outliner view for the whole manuscript with the Total Words column enabled.
I've also seen in documentation that I should be able to track progress toward a chapter target. I found I can set a target for a chapter in the Outliner view for the manuscript, if I add the target column and double click into a cell. But then the progress doesn't seem to be tracked anywhere while I am working so I have to keep returning to the manuscript Outliner view and compare the Total Words column to the Target column myself. Is there no better way?
tl/dr: Clicking on some chapters updates the number of items selected as displayed in the footer; clicking other chapters does not. Also can't track progress toward chapter word count targets.

This might be a bug, but maybe there are subdocuments below your documents that Scrivener may count. Also, other items inside folders, like images or PDFs might be included in the item count.
Have you clicked the Word Count in the Editor's footer to display the Pop-up with extended Statistics?
The word count only shows up in the footer when I have a single document selected, not when I have a chapter selected. Is it supposed to show up in both?
For what it's worth, I have no other nesting. Just chapters containing scenes. The scenes don't have anything but text and have no children documents.
When you select several documents in the binder, does the pop-up show the total word count of all selected documents?
I'm sorry, are we still discussing the pop-up that you get by clicking on the word count in the footer? As I mentioned, there is no word count in the footer for me to click on to get the pop-up when I have more than one thing selected.
Yes, a Chapter folder is not the same as a few selected documents. I'll go and try it out in Scrivener...
Yes, this works when you select the Scrivenings View after selecting several text documents OR a folder. 😉
The number centered in the footer of the Editor always represent Word Count, never items in a folder... If you want to see a count of subdocuments, Choose View > Outline > Show Subdocuments Counts in Binder. That count will show up right-aligned next to the folder title in the Binder.
To see Progress in the Outliner you must have set a Target on the Documents inside the Folder. Use the Target icon in the bottom right corner of an individual document to set its Target. In the Outliner show the Target and Progress columns via View > Outliner Options and you get nice Progress bars to show your... err... Progress. You can also add the Total Target and Total Progress columns if you want to see you Progress towards all Documents inside a folder.
I've discovered the "# items" in the footer of the Outliner (as opposed to the Editor). This seems to show the number of Items Shown in the Outliner. When you select one or two lines it will change to 2 of # items. It doesn't show the number of items inside a folder... I've noticed the # Items is not updated until you select an item inside the Outliner pane.
Hope this helps...
