You are not mine to keep.

Poem

I close my eyes as I close my mind.

I lose what I could never find,

My golden pedestaled fire,

The reason I reach ever higher.

In the darkness one thought creeps,

And in my heart one truth seeps.

You are not mine to keep.

I pray it's not what it seems.

I lay next to you as you dream.

But even as I try to seam,

Me to yours and yours to me,

As an overflowing bowl,

My heart can not contain your soul.

Do I batter it down and clip its wings,

Drown it every time it sings,

Shade every light to which it clings,

Just so it can be with me?

So, I cry beside you in a heap,

Careful not to disturb your sleep.

You are not mine to keep.

What do I say when you awake?

When you see all we are is fake,

Will you see how little is at stake?

I will crawl on bloody knees.

I will beg and I will plea.

I will paint you a spring tree,

of what I can someday be.

Don't let me blind what you can see.

Do not forget that I am me.

From what I sowed I will reap.

So go ahead and take the leap.

You are not mine to keep.

Shed the chains of which I bound.

I'll only hate what I capture.

Don't listen to the lies I sound.

Leave me to my darkest rapture.

I will be what I will,

So don't mind any tears I spill,

They are all for me.

So let us both know.

So let us both know.

You are not mine to keep.

My fear, the one most deep;

Will you even deign to weep?
