Why is Appalachian listed a relevant cultural background option on my daughter’s medical form?

I’m not upset about it and I checked the box because I am Appalachian. I’m just very curious about it. I filled out many medical forms for my other daughter at the same hospital and have never seen Appalachian listed. Anyone know why and what the relevance could be?

Edit: The other options were Amish, Somalian, and other.

There are notable health issues and disparities for Appalachians.

Sorry man but you ever thought it might be about inbreeding? In appalachia as a whole...there was a family there that turned blue apparently. Certain Somalian tribes inbreed, plus Amish is a pretty small gene pool. I doubt it's for anything other than medical curiousity though.

It could possibly be!

The family I think you’re talking about is the Fugates. Their blueness didn’t actually come from inbreeding. The first mother and father both carried the gene for it and that was where it came from. The inbreeding later was a coincidence.

Hi, Indigo_Slam. Your comment contains the word Somalian.

The correct nationality/ethnic demonym(s) for Somalis is Somali.

It's a common mistake so don't feel bad.

For other nationality demonym(s) check out this website Here
