Question about coronation ace lite blades (in comments)

UPDATE to my original post: I skated in a two hour session and the blades did not feel slippy…wtf lol. Someone pointed out ice temp can make a difference and it dawned on me that my rink has been abnormally cold recently…much colder than it usually is. I’m guessing this would make the ice harder and in turn my blades would have a harder time gripping. I think it’s just the ice 🤷🏻‍♀️ sucks that there’s inconsistency within the same rink.

I recently switched from standard coronation ace blades to the lite version. I overall really love the blades but I’ve been having some issues with them. With the standard aces I was skating on a 5/8” hollow. When I switched to the lites, I went up to 1/2” (due to the blade being thinner than the standard aces) and it was way too slippy for me. So I went up to 7/16” and this has felt fantastic. I’ve been keeping track of my hours on ice and last night in my session (~7 hours since sharpening) they felt slippy again out of nowhere. Do I need a deeper hollow again? I really liked how the 7/16” felt, but I can’t just sharpen my skates every single week. Is this something that happens with new blades? Do they need a couple sharpenings to “break them in?” I read a post somewhere on a forum from a skate tech who had a client with ace lites who was complaining that the blades were dulling quicker than they should be…is this a known issue with ace lites? Thanks for any info.

Here’s the forum post if anyone wanted to see it:

I will check out the screws but there’s definitely no rust 🙂

Do you have permanent or test mount?

It’s just a temp mount right now. I just got them put on a couple weeks ago

Your thinner blade combined with the deeper hollow means the edges will feel duller, faster, so you'll have to sharpen them more often.

I haven't heard of one skater so far that prefers the CA lites to the CA regular. Add your complaint to the list, I guess.

Ugh, that is a big bummer…I certainly don’t feel like sharpening my skates every 2 weeks 😩 I really love the feel of the lites. They glide so smooth and switching edges is so effortless.

Could also be a sign that the blades are too low level for the skater.

My protege blades needed to be sharpened every month before I upgraded them to the Apex elite. Now I sharpen them every 3 months depending on schedule (making sure they are not super dull at competition or test day but not super sharp either).

As someone on lites, and still on a half inch grind, i love my ace lites. Have a lot of skater friends on lites and no complaints from them. Aside from one major comment, catchfoot’s a pain to relearn when you come from traditional blades. Noticed that my sharpenings hold 20 hours average on the ice.

I suspect two things:

  1. The blade you got has a manufacturing error. And since there is a lifetime warranty you can try and raise it to your skate shop or to JW directly.

  2. Your sharpener did a terrible job. Or if your sharpener’s pretty good, it might be one of those bad sharpening days which happens.

Dont give up on the lites yet. But if you hate it, change your blades go back to regular aces. Cause you dont want to waste money and ice time slipping on ice.

Thanks for the reply. I’m definitely not planning to give up on the lites because I really love them in every other aspect! I don’t feel it was a poor sharpening job because they have always done a fine job on my blades and they felt really good this time too. I’m wondering if something is up with the blades themselves. I’m thinking I’ll get them re-sharpened one more time and see if it happens again. If it does, I’ll reach out to JW. They seem pretty receptive and are very responsive via social media.

What are the ice conditions like at your rink(s)? If it's old/not well maintained, it's possible the hardness/softness of your ice is inconsistant and varies from week to week (or even day to day) which would give you the slipping feeling out of the blue. It might not be a problem with the blades or the sharpening at all if your rink is anything like mine. ( old and underfunded!)

My rink is in a very wealthy area and is the nicest one that I have personally been to. I have noticed that it’s been extra cold there lately, so maybe the ice is harder than usual?
