Planning a Golf Trip to Southern California

DISCUSSION

I am planning a golf trip in June to Southern California with my dad and some friends. We will be staying at a golf resort in Carlsbad for 4 nights. The plan right now is to play courses in the surrounding area and then if we want to play twice in a day we will play a second round at the resort.

We fully intend to play Torrey Pines South while there. But we need 2 other courses to play. We are looking at Aviara, Maderas, Oak Quarry, and Torrey North.

Just hoping to get opinions from the sub on which of those we should go for and if there are any others in the area we should consider. Thanks in advance.

Aviara and Maderas. Oak Quarry is good, but much further from where you are than those and not worth the extra drive (and those are better courses anyway). If you're already playing Torrey South, no need to add the North IMO. It's gonna feel similar to South and isn't as good. Aviara and Maderas will feel like distinct courses and are 2 of the best in that area.

This is the only answer OP should consider as truth.

Agree 100%. Maderas and Aviara stand out so much.

Can’t go wrong with Aviara and Maderas. The Crossings in Carlsbad is a fun track. Haven’t played there in a while so no clue what shape it’s in.

Good shape but still ridiculously difficult particularly the tiered greens when you don't know where to place it. Omni La Costa gets a vote from me before they shut it, remodel, and make it private. Also, I hear Arrowwood is a lot of fun for a less expensive adventure but I haven't played there yet.

We are actually staying at Omni La Costa, so it will definitely get played.

The Champions is tougher with some really challenging holes. I preferred Legends side but I also prefer chill golf over challenging golf.

Arrowood is a fun track but it’s usually packed and can play pretty slow.

Goat Hill in Oceanside and is a short drive from Carlsbad and is a cheap fun option. Leave your driver in the bag lol.

Golf Club of California in Fallbrook is near Carlsbad and is a great course. Fairways are pretty dry right now but greens were rolling well and were receptive.

Cross Creek in De Luz/Temecula isn’t too bad of a drive from Carlsbad (45 min) and it’s in the middle of nowhere so if you are looking to escape the sound of cars while you are playing it’s a challenging track.

A wonderful time to schedule a fitting as all the manufacturers have facilities in Carlsbad....Callaway, Taylormade Kingdom, Evnroll, etc.

I actually just got new irons, wedges, and putter from Club Champion last Saturday. Love them.
