Lilacs grow on Neptune

Poem

Let me tell you about
Your hair
and the way it caught the light
Your eyes
and the way they went with the hair
I'll stay up for you, I'll fall in love with you
I don't care

So vivacious, so raucous this Saturday night
so many liquor bottles lined up on the counter
so many sweatered sentinels, one step away from shattering
I wish I was older
I wish I washed my hands with tequila and cared less
and looked presentable and at my best

Even though it's never true
I'll still sing it back to you
of how much I love your smile, your skin, more lovely outside than in
Everything is so gorgeous, I’m sorry that words have failed me
I'm a writer, and I’m making a fool of myself, and I know that’s what’s happening
but yeah, so sequined was your skirt
that you made jaws drop when you came in, my eyes still hurt
from looking at you

Scattered stars, we sweat out constellations in specific patterns
Here, let's play connect the dots
with me
We'll find new ways of rewriting the planets
as the wiring that threads us all in and out of orbit is coming undone
I want to be holding your hand, connecting Saturn to Venus
Mercury to Mars.
Lilacs grow on Neptune, I have a bouquet
growing up, moving out, barely controlled disarray.
