A War Going On

Poem

There's a war going on

In a place I've never been.

Where men are merely pawns,

And all are forced to sin.

Their brother doesn't care,

He'd rather look away.

It would be too much to bear,

A distraction from his play.

And yet he feels a thorn,

Embedded in his heart.

Where sympathies are born,

And where the seas may part.

Imagining the just,

Among the beaten down,

Who swim against the flood

And refuse to drown.

I do not know their names,

Their faces or their tongue.

Banished to the flames,

They were all too young.

There's a war going on

Within my faculties.

Should I embrace the dawn,

And accept my duties?

Whatever is the case,

I cannot make it out.

Brothers are merely mortal,

Our hearts are filled with doubt.

There is no black or white.

Only shades of grey.

Standing in the twilight,

Between the night and day.
