Poem

Driving across gravel on backcountry roads

The dust turns to clouds which I watch as they float.

My wheels gouge in and the white plumes explode

In a crisscrossing causeway of motorists’ moats.

So strangely surreal, so simply sublime,

Is this land where the ground meets the soft sky.

I feel more alive when the dust burn my eyes

And slowly I sway across the great waves of time.

The road twists and I'm gently moved to the side;

Gravity weighs in with its never-ending might.

I turn off the radio and listen to the sounds

Of rubber wheels kissing the rough, rocky ground.

I know I’m lost and yet at the same time I’m found

As through the window, the sweet wind does howl

Like a pack of wolves on a moon-drenched night,

It guards primal secrets of lost, ancient rights.

If only I had wings I feel I would take flight

And pluck every star from the ethereal sky.

Returning to Earth to seed the cool ground,

I’d cover each sunburst in tender dirt mounds.

Tomorrow the sun would rise out from the clouds

And grow a forest of heaven here in this small town.
