It's nice to see San Diego get her AA buffed, but I thought it important to put into context just how much her AA changes with the new version of the consumable. To this end, I've put together this list of tier VIII cruiser sustained AA damage output. The target aircraft are fictional, 186.2 knot planes with infinite HP and immunity to flak (don't ask).

Those ships marked with a blue asterisk always have access to DFAA and don't need to choose between it or another consumable.

Because San Diego started off with a rather modest sustained AA DPS total, the doubling by DFAA isn't as dramatic as some might think. By the standards of the day, where AA efficiency is contentious, San Diego's new potential AA is good when compared to the overall listing. However, the actual efficacy in game doesn't necessarily reflect how high a ship appears on this list (ie: Just because Mainz is directly below San Diego, that doesn't necessarily mean that their AA performance will be comparable).

Please, at least tell me those weren't Russian planes, you're making me scared

13
AprilWhiteMouseOPYukon's Mom•

No, it's an arbitrary speed. 186.2 knots works out to 500m/s once you account for World of Warships' distance compression. It just makes things easier to math, especially when you're dealing with sustained AA DPS ticking at 2/7ths of a second and flak ticking for 1/7th of a second.

Could we have a comparison of San Diego and Atlanta with the DFAA and standard number comparison based on your math?

I know it's a dumb request but I don't have a filtered spreadsheet of all your work to plagiarize...i mean borrow.

11
AprilWhiteMouseOPYukon's Mom•

Sure.

  • Atlanta: 2126 base, 3,189 with DFAA
  • Flint: 2632 base, 3,948 with DFAA.

Hey now, don't give WG any ideas for planes for a russian supercarrier.

I appreciate your dedication to put numbers together for the benefit of the community.

Putting aside the fact AA is a joke, the real issue is that skip bombers are a thing and utterly ignore AA.

Weegee went the extra mile to make CL's role in the game miserable.

De 7 is just insane.

48
Bwob•

Yeah, a lot of people still don't realize just what an AA powerhouse D7P is.

And the best part is that it gets those numbers without needing (or having access to) AA consumables. So planes flying by don't even get the red tracer shells as a warning - they just melt.

The other nice thing about the D7P is that the captain skill that decreases airstrike cooldown (which you probably want, since airstrikes are the D7P's main gimmick) also increases your AA damage when you select a priority side.

Such a fun ship!

I'm kicking myself over not grinding through it, not just because it seems pretty fun with AA that damn powerful, but because it still exists and is becoming a museum ship.

Haku was the only person attacking me so I could spend my entire time dodging their attacks so combined with USS Iowa having really good AA I got 67 planes before I went down.

Shit was that recently?

I think I might've been in your game as a Tirpitz, we were right next to each other. We pushed the left flank and into the enemy spawn on the Northern Waters map.

EDIT: I remembered wrong, our DE-7 shot down 93 planes from a Kaga + Saipan.

They should genuinely give San Diego the Atlanta treatment with infinite DFAA. She's already getting her reload booster nerfed down to 2 charges, so why not give the ship something that falls in line with her sister ships?

Or just do it because CVs deserve no mercy.

36
Dark_MagusClubbed Seal•

Honestly I'd say ditch the reload booster entirely (even with the nerfed SAP alpha she's going to be brutal when the booster is on and base reload is 5s). Just give her 4s reload and have her be a dakkabote that can't set fires.

But hell yes to infinite charges of DFAA.

12
ImaNukeYourFace[KILL] NA•

Yeah I really feel like the reload booster consumable is not very fun to play against, and also not very fun to play WITH, it’s just crap for both sides.

For the person getting shot, the reason it sucks is pretty obvious. Oneshotting mechanics aren’t anything new though, and it is fairly counterable by nosing-in or having enough armor to shatter the SAP and HE.

But it also sucks to play as the ship with the reload booster, because your regular DPM gets nerfed to shimakaze tier without the booster. Makes the ship feel very anemic to play, and you’re just kinda bored when your booster is cooling down

8

I say that some reload booster ships are fun to play like the French DD`s

Yeah, Cheshire is an overlooked AA boat. And a lot of it is large caliber AA guns (she has more large mounts than Drake and Goliath).

3
FumiKaneRTSoration•

What is sad is that today I faced one in my Indomitable and since he was very close I didn't slingshot that well, I ended up in his DFAA bubble and only lost 1 plane, even the best AA barely works at times...

7
simplysufficient88•

"only lost 1 plane" while in the t8 CV with the highest HP planes and second highest speed. Considering you slingshot too, that means that his AA shot down either 1/4th or 1/2 of your planes post-slingshot. That's still really effective for how short a time Indomitable spends inside AA.

6
lego-baguetteEugen please marry me•

This thing should’ve gotten d7p levels of AA. or even more. This ship had the most MONSTROUS AA in the entire ww2. But we all know weegee loves AA.

I thought Harbin would be higher having just ground the line. Shot down plenty of planes - maybe just because it's got stealth air spotting and you get flown over in smoke...

2
AprilWhiteMouseOPYukon's Mom•

There's more to AA than just raw damage output (though that's very important).

Range factors a lot. You're more likely to engage aircraft that aren't specifically targeting you if you have more reach.

Concealment matters too. If your ship is known for having great AA and can be spotted from a distance, CVs are likely to give you a wider berth, avoiding your AA altogether and reducing how much incidental damage you do on a per-match basis. They may even be out-performed by a ship with more modest AA totals but excellent concealment as they pick up more "accidental" damage by surprising CVs that have no intention of engaging them.

Flak also figures into this. Yes, flak is a meme. Yes, it can be largely avoided, especially at low to mid tiers. However, just one flak hit on a squadron horribly skews AA damage to the point that even the rare hit exerts far more influence than is generally given credit by surface ship players.

Ship type matters too. Battleships are more likely to survive to the end-game and face disproportionate CV attention at this stage than other ship types, for example. DDs tend to get the attention in the early game.

Consumables are a thing too.

And there's probably other factors too.

wait is baltimore really better than rochester? i’ve had much more success shooting down planes in rochester than baltimore

1
AprilWhiteMouseOPYukon's Mom•

Baltimore puts out more sustained damage on aircraft sailing straight towards the ship, yes. The catch is that Baltimore needs those aircraft to stray inside her 2km aura to make up the difference. If the aircraft never enter that 2km bubble (say, skip bombers) then Rochester will feel oh-so slightly stronger. Here's their damage per aura:

Baltimore: 1116 / 2009 / 571
Rochester: 1116 / 2545 / ---

11

interesting. i can’t say i played baltimore much before i decided to grind other things but i was recently rewarded with a rochester and have had a couple personally record breaking games as far as plane kills go (first 60 and then 67)

1
Turkfire•

What is the most effective aa ship in the game?

1
AprilWhiteMouseOPYukon's Mom•

I can't measure efficacy as there's more that goes into that than simply raw damage (range, consumables, focus fire, concealment etc). I'm also still gradually assembling the list of AA for all ships in the game. The highest damage done by sustained AA (so far) without modifiers comes from carriers. I'll have a list "soon".

2

Wow, while using DFAA, San Diego (arguably the best AA cruiser in WW2) almost reaches the AA power of a 1952 De Zeven Prov. who hasn't that consumable.

Impressive job, weegee.
