Parry mechanics

Game Help

Hi!

I'm new to souls games, I'm trying to beat the draconic tree sentinal outside of malikek in the azlua ruins. I'm trying to do it via parrying him and learn how parrying works in the game in general. I'm running into a situation where I'm clearly not being hit by an attack, but I lose a lot of stamina and do what seems to be a "partial" parry. I'm just not sure what this means and how it exactly works... does it mean I'm too late, too fast, too far? I've searched around and no one really seems to have any details on this. I'm mostly just curious on what the hell I'm doing wrong haha. I can't figure out what it means!

You don't know if it's too far, slow or fast, but it's definitely one of those.

You just have to get a feel for when you actually get a parry, and then when you get partials you'll realize what it was.

Can’t parry everything. Usually not giant/colossal weapons which is what I think tree sentinel has so probably can’t parry. Can get a partial parry as you describe but no parry. You can parry normal horse back riders and it will knock them off their horse. Can practice this in Limgrave lots of horseback riders.
