First pair of glasses for mild astigmatism and I have some questions
For the first time in my life, I'm wearing glasses for astigmatism and it's pretty disorienting.
Everything seems to be squished, which is causing my depth perseption to be off, making walking a slight challenge with steps, and my peripheral vision to be wonky. I've heard that in a week or so, it won't even be noticable but while my vision without glasses was pretty good, after only half a day, when I take them off, my vision is pretty bad; does this mean that as my eyes adjust to the glasses, my previous vision without them will just naturally get worse? When my vision adjusts to the glasses, since everything seems naturally squished so a 1x1 boxes is closer to a .85x1 rectangle, will my mind just naturally return it to a 1x1 or will everything naturally be squished?

It should go away in a week or two whether it's due to lens design or astigmatism. If it's lens design, go with lenses that are aspheric along with being digitally surfaced sometimes called HD in the future. If it's your astigmatism. You were seeing things bent without glasses, but your brain was compensating so you didn't notice, which attributes to eye strain. Your brain hasn't figured out yet that it doesn't need to still be compensating but it will.
Unless you're a kid, glasses can't damage or change your vision, so they haven't made your vision worse without glasses, your vision was just that bad all along.
