Double-barrel first names [Scotland, 2021]

:list: Name List

The names of babies born in Scotland in 2021 have just been released, and as I was browsing I noticed a lot of double-barrel first names. I decided to make a list of them all here. Some of them are pretty standard, others unusual, some shockingly nice, and others definitely not for me. There are also of course a lot more double-barrel girl names than boy names, so brace yourself for a long list.

I find this trend so annoying. I don't understand why anyone would do this over just doing a first name and middle name, eg Zara Violet [2nd middle name] [lastname] instead of Zara-Violet [middle name] [lastname]. She's going to just be called Zara 99% of the time anyway, so it's unnecessary to mash two names together. Comes off kinda pretentious most times imo, like the parents need their kid to just be soo unique and different 🙄. And it usually just ends up flowing badly and looking ugly. The only exceptions would be names like Mary-Jane where they're actually established like that, rather than being a random mashup.

The parents of "Princess-Victoria" especially need to reevaluate their life choices. Poor kid.

atthearkOP•

I have to admit, while some of these look nice aesthetically and sound nice to say, I cannot imagine what a headache it's probably going to be. I have seen documentation in the UK, and there's barely any room for even a particularly long singular first name. Some of these kids are going to be cramming their name in tiny letters on the top of exam papers, that's for sure.

A lot of the names here are nice and normal enough, but I do wonder what the deal is with the double-barreling. Like you said, it could easily just be two names, because how many of these kids are going to be whole-named all the time? I mean, I get it, the answer is that the parents liked the name and wanted to do it that way, and no shade. But I do wonder how frustrating it will be for them when their child is just called the first "half" of the name all the time. Are they going to insist on the whole name being used exclusively? Or will they themselves just default to the first "half"?

Also, the prominence of some of the seconds "halves", particularly for girls (Rose, Leigh, May/Mae, etc) makes me wonder. I'm sure the parents like the name, else they wouldn't have chosen it, but these names in particular seem very filler-ish. If I was going to make a point of double-barelling my kid's name, I'd make it interesting. I think in my entire name list there's only one double-barrel name I love, which is Billie-Jo, but that's one of those established double names.

5
pie12345678•

Against my usual preferences, I actually think the more filler-ish second halves work best. Anything too original feels like it's breaking the formula of how double-barrelled names work.

2
leafyblue14•

A lot of the "filler-ish" ones flow the best, but in the same way that filler middle names seem pointless (unless they have special meaning for you), it seems redundant to add them onto a first name. Imo it's just making the name more complicated rather than making it nicer.

2
pie12345678•

I'm not too mad at Zara-Violet, but who the hell is out there actually calling their kid Alexander-Jericho or Monica-Elisabeta on a regular basis?? And if that wasn't their plan then why are they putting their kid through the hassle of a completely pointless double-barrel?

2

Surprised there's no Mary-Anne to be honest.

Rarri-Aurora: Oof. Smooth like sandpaper.

Marllei-Ann: Spelling from hell.

Charley-Leigh: Sort of like Roseanne-Ann.

Daisy-Roo: I’d prefer Kanga.

Darriah-Reign: Better stay close to the toilet.

Evette-Evelyn: Pick one, dammit.

Harloh-Soph: Harloh-Nope.

Mellackie-Jac: I think my mechanic has one of these.

Ocean-Bleu: Yes, yes, it is.

River-Bleu: See above.

Billie-Beau, Bowe-Duke, Briysone-Beau: Please let these be triplets.

Harley-Leigh: Must be twins with Charley-Leigh.

Enoch-Praise: I guess Enoch-Constructive-Criticism was too long.

Actually chortling like a rich baron at this comment. Did not even notice the unfortunate connotations of "Darriah". I did notice Ocean-Bleu, River-Bleu... I think there were a few others like this that either stated the obvious or sounded like a place name. I know parents are probably focusing on how things sound and look together, but I would have liked to think that they would realise if they were naming their child a whole-ass statement.

So many double barreled names Do Not Work

8
atthearkOP•

My conspiracy theory is that many people fall in love with double-barrel names when they see the more common ones that are established or at least work, but... these names are obviously popular for that reason, and parents want to choose a more unique name. So they just kind of make their own double-barrel name and think it's as simple as putting two names they like together, with no attention paid to the length, flow, or meaning. Maeva-Mae, for example. On their own, decent names -- Maeva might be a little unusual and she might get "Maeve" a lot, but it's fine. But Maeva-Mae? It's the same name twice, with a "va" as a bridge. Either the parents just didn't think, or they did it on purpose, and I'm not sure which is worse.

My daughter is named Arabella Rae (born in Scotland in 2019), and it's interesting to see someone has chosen to hyphenate the same name. To be fair, I call her Arabella Rae fairly often because its fun to say, but I kind of hate the way it looks double-barrelled.

3
atthearkOP•

Arabella-Rae was one of the names I found I really liked! Arabella is such a strong name, but still manages to be pretty, and with the softer Rae afterwards it flows wonderfully. Plus the semi-alliteration with the [r] sound does make it very fun to say.

As I said in another comment, I do think it's much better when parents just give the two separate names, like you did. I don't know, it feels like there's a little more choice in how the child is called, and variation for different situations, rather than the name being stuck together and people feeling like they have to say the whole thing all the time. In some settings that's probably fine, like teachers or doctors or something, but with the child's own peer group it might be a bit odd.

1
pie12345678•

The majority of these seem to be chosen by parents who just liked the idea of a hyphen, with zero regard for whether the combo flows or will ever be used in full. I'm not mad at Ella-Rose or John-Patrick, but names like Pernielle-Cheryl and Levi-O'Connor truly did not need to be hyphenated.

I wonder, are these expecting people to call their kids by all 7, 8 syllables of the full name? Like, are Alexander-Jericho's parents out there scolding people for calling him Alex?

2
atthearkOP•

That's my thought as well. I have heard of parents insisting that the child's whole name be used (at least until the kid is old enough that the parents can't really control it anymore) and with a shorter name alright, fine. I feel like it's a losing battle, because Thomas is bound to become Tom at school, and Elizabeth is probably going to drop a few syllables in her friend group, but this is normal and most parents will likely accept it even if they continue to use a full name in the house.

But all of these syllables? Some of these names are a lot of syllables lol. I do think that insisting that the kid is always called by the whole name is just. A bit of a mouthful. I think if the parents were really insistent about all the name, all the time, it could come across as being a little pretentious. I don't know, a lot of these names struck me as parents just not being able to decide on just the one name, so they slapped them both together. Many of them would work nicely as middle names (Alexander Jericho Lastname actually sounds pretty nice to me?) but as a double-barrel name it's just clunky.

2
pie12345678•

Yeah, I normally respect parents' preferences until the child is old enough to ask for something else, but when the name is 5+ syllables, it tests people's patience. Like it or not, we're kind of wired to choose brevity over complication.

I remember someone once posted lamenting that people called their daughter Ella instead of her full name, Ella-Callaway. All I could think was, that's five syllables and the second name sounds like it's her surname. What did you expect?

2
atthearkOP•

Exactly. Like, I'll respect the parents' choice like you said, until the child can express preference, but some names are just... a lot. Especially as a lot of people speaking at regular speaking speed will kind of run the names on, so you'd get something like Alexanderjericho or Ellacallaway, and that last one is a lot of repeating sounds. I think I saw some people refer to names like that as peanut butter names, because it really does feel like my mouth is full with something sticky when I say it.

It's a shame, because a lot of these names are nice as separate names. I think a lot of parents don't realise that when they double-barrel a name, they're making both names into one name, and that rarely works. Having that gap between the name, either as a middle name or a first middle name, really does make a lot of difference. I once knew a girl whose name was Demi Leigh, with "Leigh" being technically her middle name, but she always introduced herself as and went by both names. The little pause between the first and second names made it work, but if she had been Demi-Leigh I just don't think it would have sounded as nice.

My goddaughter's name is Anne-Marie. Exclusively Anne-Marie and we never called her anything else. Still call her Anne-Marie 100% of the time. Her parents then had another girl named Lily-Claire....... but they decided to call her just Lily. So sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

2
atthearkOP•

I knew an Anne-Marie when I was growing up, and she was exclusively Anne-Marie too, never just Anne! I think this is one of those established double names, like Mary-Kate or Billie-Jo or John-Paul, that's a whole name in its own right. The Anne-Marie I knew was the only kid with a double name though -- her siblings were Caireann and Ciarán. She had the stand-out name lol.

Personally I wouldn't reccomend alba as a name It means Scotland in gaelic and just sounds silly to us

1
atthearkOP•

I would have thought it was the same as Erin in Ireland tbh. Erin is the more common form of Éireann, said the same way, and is another name for Ireland. Being Irish myself (and an Irish speaker) I never thought it was weird when I met an Irish Erin, and a Scottish Alba would be kind of in the same bracket!
