S03E03: Obstacle Course references Gallipoli (1981)

Season 3A

So I'm in Canada and got fed-up waiting for Disney to share Season 3 with us, and stalked down season 3 with the strongest possible computer protection I could, and I've made it up to S03E03; when I came across this reference, that I never in a million years expected to find in Bluey of all places.

There was a WWI movie made in 1981 called Gallipoli, that I didn't know anyone else in the world remembers.

Mel Gibson needs to run fast, for WWI reasons

He needs a pep talk

Jack: How fast can you run?

Archy: As fast as a leopard greyhound.

Jack: How fast are you going to run?

Archy: As fast as a leopard greyhound.

Right in the feels, as always, Bluey...

Lol, Australians are pretty much required to watch this at school. I don’t know anyone here who hasn’t seen it at least twice. Given that ANZAC Day is coming up, I imagine it’s been shown in thousands of classrooms in the last couple of weeks.

Makes me wonder if we ever get an Australia day or Anzac day ep!

In the Army episode they are routed by a Turkey. 😏

It was Mark Lee who's received the famous pep talk, not Mel Gibson.

I stand corrected; admittedly it had been a while since I've seen that film

On the other hand, I watched Gallipoli in school twice, once in middle school and again in high school, and do not know why. I always wrote it off as some obscure cultural touchpoint that we were required to be exposed to, even though outside of those two classrooms I never heard anyone reference it ever again. Until now, I guess.

OP EDIT:

Just rewatched Gallipoli. It's clearly been many years since I saw this, and I got some stuff way wrong.

Mark Lee is our Leopard Greyhound, and the final, most tragic utterance of those lines is a monologue.

It was the first film of Australian director Peter Weir and one of the first for Australian actor Mel Gibson.

Its depiction of foxhole fighting and use of the famous baroque Adagio (apocryphally by Tomaso Albinoni) is legendary.

It would have surprised me more if those smart Aussies at Ludo hadn't referenced that by this point in the series.

Still waiting for the ep with an allusion to Picnic at Hanging Rock or The Man From Snowy River, though.

I thought it was The Cars that Ate Paris was his first feature?

David Williamson, who wrote the screenplay, posted about this on Instagram (?) not long after the episode screened in Australia.

Can find the post, but he approved.

I always remembered the first two lines from that quote:

“What are your legs? Springs. Steel springs. What are they going to do? Hurl me down the track. How fast can you run? As fast as a leopard. How fast are you going to run? As fast as a leopard! Then let’s see you do it!”

Just wish in this episode they'd not have Bandit act so OOC. And force Chili to suddenly be the mature one out of all 3 when they used to share the maturity.

Competitiveness is Bandit's character flaw though.

Same as in the Squash game against Uncle Stripes.

You say that, but he lost on purpose there ;)

Which means you go from him losing on purpose to make his younger brother feel better, to him cheating in the same episode he mocked Bluey for cheating and how winning that way doesn't count.

And I know the only reason they wrote it like that was so they could do a memory snap ending after the earlier setup. Even though it makes Bandit look entirely OOC and goes against the lesson taught in the same episode.

Competitiveness to a fault, but he'd never Cheat. Especially not in a way that would also make Bluey feel bad.

Obstacle course will always be a bad episode in my eyes to skip. S3 has the first episodes in the shows history for me ever to skip, a few others in there.
