What is something that you thought would make you happy but didn't work?

Hi Reddit- I'm looking for some myths about happiness. What are some things that you thought would make you happy, but didn't (or the happiness went away). Alternatively, what is something that unexpectedly made you SO HAPPY but you didn't realize it would have that effect beforehand?

Living in France.

I hate that country. Can't wait to move back home.

I thought college was going to be the best thing that ever happened to me. It's been alright, but mostly its like high school with more alcohol and harder work, all while being 1200 miles away from my friends and family.

I'm a prof who researches positive psychology (which is about happiness). I can hook you up if you need happiness inducing tips. This post AMA question is for a book I'm working on - I'm trying to look at FAILED happiness attempts. I guess I can add this post as a fail too.
