Quick heads up: even though they’re called freshman seminars, once the quarter starts they open up to anyone with space in their schedule.

And honestly… these are one of the most underrated moves at UCI.

Why people who’ve taken them swear by them:

  • 1 unit (easy GPA boost)
  • super small classes (rare at UCI)
  • actual interaction with a professor
  • WAY easier to meet people
  • one of the best ways to get a legit letter of rec later

If you’ve ever wondered how people get into labs or have profs who actually know them… this is one of the main ways.

Still some open spots right now:

Hey y’all — just a heads up: there are still some Freshman Seminars open for Fall quarter and they’re not just for freshmen anymore, anyone can take them now since the restrictions were just dropped.

These are the 1-unit, super small (like 15 people) classes where you actually get to hang out with a professor and talk about cool niche stuff they care about. Honestly, they’re kinda the hidden gems at UCI — low stress, interesting topics, and a nice break from giant lectures.

Also: don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll get a strong rec letter from a prof in a 400-person class who doesn’t even know your name. These seminars are literally built for connecting with faculty, and th

This is your reminder to sign up for Freshman Seminars this quarter: These are tiny 15 person classes on fun topics worth only 1 credit- great way to get to know other people, learn something new, get a faculty member to know you for a letter of rec down the line, and generally, are a fun easy A experience with lots of discussion (and they are open to any major so you can take something totally different for a change). Even tho they are called freshman sems, the restrictions drop before the quarter starts. It looks like there are still spots in a bunch of them like crafting software, the art of collaboration, human vision, one on the gut microbiome, one on data analysis for non quant people

Hey all- just some advice to check out the 1 unit Freshman Uni Stu classes. They are capped at 15 people so you really get to know a prof (for letters of rec down the line) and you can take topics outside your major. Not a ton of work and typically pretty interesting. Here are the ones for the fall ( a few are full - fresh/soph limits on reg drop at the start of the spring quarter).

Uni Stu 3 courses:

Enrollment in Uni Stu 3 courses will be restricted to freshmen until the day the 18-unit enrollment limit is lifted. Freshmen with sophomore standing may request an exception to allow them to enroll.

After the freshman-only date, enrollment in Uni Stu 3 will be open to all lower-divisio

Given the huge numbers of giant many hundred person classes on campus, i wanted to let people know about these tiny 1 unit 15 person classes on campus. Really great for people headed to grad school who might need a letter of rec from a prof that knows them better than a random face out of 400 :) https://freshmanseminar.uci.edu/freshman-seminars-2023-winter/ Right now it looks like all of them have openings for lower div undergrads and the topics look great (a bunch of pre-med stuff, for example). Also a good place to make some friends in a small class setting or discover a new major/minor.
