48" C1 Buyer's Remorse...

Discussion

Okay, so maybe that is a bit dramatic, but...

I bought the 48" C1 this weekend because $999 is hard to pass up. I have not been able to game on it yet, however, I did open it up and play around with it. My one and only use for this TV is as a gaming monitor. Here are the feelings I can't shake and would really like everyone's personal feedback and experiences.

  1. 48" looks smaller in the store, but when it's by itself, it is definitely larger feeling. I have the room for it, but I can't help but think I would like the size of the 42" better, mostly because it will be about 6-7" less wide.

  2. 42" C2 is $400 more, which isn't a terrible amount more, but it's also brand new. Despite being smaller, is the C2 $400 better than the C1?

  3. I have a RTX 3080 TI, so I am really excited for 4K gaming. Aside from the 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports, are there any gaming features in the C2 over the C1 that I should factor in with the GPU I have? When I did my research, there did not seem to be anything but beyond G-Sync, I am honestly pretty ignorant with gaming-specific features within monitors and TVs.

Thank you all for your feedback!

The only reason to get the C2 over the C1 at current prices is for the 42” size. It’s that simple - is the smaller size worth $400 more? That’s the question to ask yourself. To some people it is, to others it isn’t and that’s perfectly fine.

Give yourself some more time on your 48” and really use it to see if you can get accustomed to it assuming you’re within a return window. It’s a shock to go so much larger but most people tend to get used to it with time.

Yep, this is it.

I have the 48” C1 at work and I sit about 36” away from it, it’s great at that distance. My home desk is only 24” away from my monitor, so a 48” would be uncomfortably big, for me. So, I ordered a 42”, it’s still going to be huge at that distance.

Isn’t the c2 brighter and otherwise improved?

You wont notice any difference. LG oleds stagnated for several generations now.

I honestly don’t care about brighter. I have a 65” 1st gen OLED from 2017, so anything modern will be brighter than that.

Nah, trust me. I have the same set up. 48 C1 w 3080ti. Just get yourself a wider desk and make sure you walk mount it. You can grab a good deal off of Amazon for a full range one.

Get yourself a 2.1 hdmi and my god…it’s so good. I game and do office work 60/40 of the time and I’ll never go back.

Make sure to auto hide the task bar, place a black background, and don’t put any icons on your desktop. You’re golden.

It’s not a desk limitation for me. I won’t be using it for anything other than PC gaming. With that said, I’ve found that 42” is my perfect threshold to game on. It’s the size that feels big enough, but not overly big where I get sensory issues. However, I hadn’t gamed on a 48” before and I can be anywhere from 4-6’ back. I used to love gaming on my 42” Panasonic ST30 plasma 🫢

If you have that much of an affinity for 42" inch, then it sounds like you should go with the C2 if you can get your hands on it. The size is really the only reason to choose C2 when you're considering value.

If you're always going to worry about "what if" and you know you enjoyed your 42" and you just need someone here to tell you to do it, then go for it.

This is why I held off on buying the 48" C1. I have an AW3821DW now and it's great but it's not OLED and it can't be used (effectively) with a console. The 42" C2 solves both of these issues so I'll be getting one whenever it's in stock. The Alienware is already huge I can't imagine making a 48" work. People are talking about sitting 3 feet away from their screen lol. Using the 48" as a monitor means everything revolves around the screen. They made the 42" for a reason. It's about as big as you can go for a PC monitor. Running it in ultrawide the screen size will be about the same as 38" ultrawide monitors which is already pretty big. All while retaining 4K 16:9 for consoles. I do think console gaming will be a little big but I guess I can sit back a bit for that.

I'd return the C1 and get the C2 while you still can.

Yeah, I think I’m going to. I have my 48” mounted and I don’t like the size for gaming.

I would have had to mount the 48in but with the stand on the 42 inch model it is 4 inches away from the wall vs 2 with a wall mount. I just got something to lift it slightly off the desk so that it is at optimal height.

davef00te•

I’m sitting approx 30-32in away and the tv is mounted around 1.75in off the desk. It’s perfect at this spot.

and if you don't want a boring black BG you can always use something like https://rocksdanister.github.io/lively/ or Wallpaper Engine.

About the 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports, i really don't see the appeal to be honest. On the C1, you can already have 4k HDR 120hz at full 4:4:4, what can you do with more bandwidth haha ? Everything is already maxed out !

Other than that, the improvements between C1 and C2 are incremental. Higher peak brightness (not night and day though), and better image processing, mainly. Other than that, it seems they are very similar in terms of features, especially about gaming. Both support VRR (HDMI-Standard, Nvidia, or AMD), HGIG, and have extremely low input latency (less than a frame at 120Hz). In my humble opinion, the C2 is better, but not 400 bucks better.

5
shitpostcastigatorOP•

No appeal, that was just an example of any noted differences. I wasn’t sure if there were other differences I ought to consider between the two generations.

Wormminator•

My recommendation: If you can afford the C2 without much trouble, go for it.

You will always wonder if the 42" would not have been the better choice.

wiwi20•

I get more fatigue on a 48. My 42 is coming next week. Its judt too much for my neck and eyes lol. My desk is 80cm.

3
onewithoutasoul•

I got the 48. I figure I'll get the 42 when it's a bit cheaper, or Asus' 42" OLED, if that ever materializes.

When that happens, the 48" will replace the 40" 1080p TV in my bedroom. Boom.

MIKE_THE_KILLER•

I would just stick with the 48". I have the CX and it's awesome. The monitor is big but I don't think it's big up to the point that it hurts my neck and eyes. I just think when you game in 4K, you should just stick with the biggest screen as possible that you can handle because it makes your video games much more immersive the closer you are to screen.

2
nutop•

i've been using my 48 CX for 2 years now and will be getting the 42 C2. i think 48 is just too big (although I have loved it for work).

2
Calibretto9•

I’ve noticed the same issue, with TVs appearing way smaller in the store and then seeming gigantic at home. Funny how that works.

2
No-Leek8587•

I was lucky that way I have a 49inch in the other room. Hooked a laptop up to it and stood 36 inches away and could tell right away it was too big.

2
badman1972•

Have you thought about using custom resolution utility and using it in ultra wide.

2
shitpostcastigatorOP•

I did see that feature but no, not at all something I feel I’ll need or ever use.

2
SnakeDoctur•

For what it's worth, I upgraded from a 34" UltraWide and my 48" C1 felt WAY too big for the first week(ish) of use. Now it feels absolutely amazing.

34" UW is by no means a "small screen" but most games these days are designed to be played on a console and on a television. I had no idea how much immersion I was missing out on. The sense of SCALE in games is so much more immersive playing on the large screen.
Which makes perfect sense, afterall the majority of modern games are designeld to be played on a console that's connected to a large, flatscreen display.

2
Suspicious_Student_6LG C1•

I have the 48" C1 and I wouldn't want to go smaller. I set it back a little bit further, and it's fantastic.

1
StillNoRTXForMe•

I would keep it. Bigger is nicer for gaming, and for me, I can usually fix a little too big - but can’t do anything about a little too small.

If money is no object you could get the c2 without returning the c1 just to check your “remorse” then, and make a decision on which to return.

1
shitpostcastigatorOP•

Thanks everyone for your input. I’m still on the fence for now but have some additional dynamics to consider. I will not be using this for anything but PC gaming. Anything monitor related, as in regular use of my PC, I’ll continue using my 27” monitor for. One thing about the 42” for me personally is that is the size I used to game on years ago and it always felt perfect.

1
n7leadfarmer•

Is there any way for you to get a bit more separation between you and the screen?

"Perfect" size is relative. If you HAD to sit 4 feet from the screen, the. 42" would not be perfect, regardless of your past experiences you know? In fairness to your point I'm debating swapping mine as well, but only in exchange for a 48" C2. I can always sit farther away, but I'll never be able to get those 6" back if I go to a 42".

Ive had my 48" C1 for just under three weeks and I'm only now in the "oh yeah, this is nice" phase. However, my uses seem different from yours and could change things.

  • work (data scientist, Microsoft power toys/fancy zones is AMAZING!!!)

  • Gaming (PS5 only, personal computer is an ancient laptop and work is done on a work-provided machine, so no gaming there. I also can play from my office chair or the couch farther back)

I'd recommend mounting the TV somehow or making temporary accomodations to comfortably use your mouse/keeb from farther away so you can really assess the screen at a viewing angle that makes sense.

I'm using a 55 inch. I got it partially so that it could double up as a living room TV. It took some getting accustomed to but now I love it and wouldn't want to go any smaller (though I do have a pretty deep desk and a keyboard tray so it's not as if I'm 2 feet away from the screen). Whatever trade-offs there may be regarding clarity or, ya know, not having to move your head so much to see things, are IMO outweighed by having the screen fill a larger portion of my visual field. It's much more immersive, in the same kind of way that VR is more immersive (though obviously not to the same extent). As others have recommended, try to see if you can get used to it. If you still don't like it and your return by date is approaching, then take it back and get the smaller one.

Kidarkade•

The C1 is perfectly fine, you aren't going to notice much of a difference between the C1 and C2 except for maybe the base of the unit (I prefer the CX/C1 bases style to the C2).

I bought a 55 CX for the living room as the 65's were out of stock. I didn't have buyers remorse per say but I would have preferred it to be larger. So I waited for the 65 prices to come down on the CX but then I found a place where I could get the 77 C1 for $2299 so I bought that.

I now have a 77 C1 in the living room and put the 55 CX in the bedroom. I have a PS5 and XBSX hooked up to both and its perfect.

1
krs31•

Nah just keep it. You’ll get used to it. I also thought my c1 was just way too big. 9 months on I am probably gonna get a 55” for my next display. The 48” is starting to look too small haha

1
icybreath11•
  1. That's a fair argument. I think in a year when 42" prices go down. People will encourage 42" over 48".

2/3. Unfortunately, there isn't a real big difference between C1 and C2. People say it's just brightness. Yes, unfortunately, you are paying 400$ for 42" instead of 48".

1
No-Leek8587•

The extra brightness is only on 55in+ though so its not a huge difference for 42 or 48 inch models.

A long review but it breaks down essentially that the c1 is actually a better TV than the c2

I kept seeing 48 gbps HDMI ports in the marketing for the C2. What is the difference between that and the HDMI 2.1 on the C1? Earc works just fine DV works just fine. I have a weird delay issue using Earc with my PC but that's a power issue with my sound bar. That's got nothing to do with bandwidth.
