The widow
A long and somber year has past
since heaven took her man.
Though nothing here on earth can last
this wasn't in her plans.
She had a list of honey do's
but hubby had to leave.
These days it's her* who does the do's.
She works as well as grieves.
Her children keep her on her toes
and save her from despair.
The more she mothers them she knows
her sorrows she can bear.
She mostly soldiers on with life
though sometimes sheds a tear.
So short a time she was** his wife.
She cherished every year.
*Should this be "she"?
**Should this be "was she"?
I had this as the stanza about the children but I decided it might be a little too common an image and my rhythms weren't quite right:
She holds her children in her arms
and kisses them at night.
Her lullabies work like a charm
and shield them from fright.
