Into the dark

Poem

Into the dark

I don't believe in anything,
Not anymore. No more than
The world can bring
me comfort, I can
believe.
You may as well ask
The earth to stop turning
To ask me to believe.

But you are not like me
Like a moth to a flame, I am drawn
To your light, to your brightness and life
For you think the world
Turns in your favor,
In favor of those who need the world's favor,
Instead of just turning away.

The world you envision
Is the world I want to live in,
The world I wish I could see
But, for me, cynicism
Isn't a decision
If it was, I'd decide to believe.

I am broken. I'm a fraud,
I am scared and damned and flawed
And I am a coward,
And I am a coward.

But you are not like me
You shine outward as much as you glow within
And your light is everblazing
For you can show the world
The hope that's in your heart
You could save anyone
but me

Every word you've ever said
And ever will say
Cannot take a knife to,
Cannot scratch my cold,
Hardened surface
Though you weave delicate verses
To unravel, unfold,
Return the life to
A brighter day
Deep inside, I am already dead.

I do not believe in anything
And that will never change
Unless anything includes you,
For I believe in your spirit
And your ambition
And your bravery
And your vision
And your hope
And you.

But you are not like me
And for my endless belief in you,
I have sacrificed your belief in me.
The cynic, the nihilist, the unbeliever
Does not deserve your attention
If it is not formed from scorn,
For we are drawn to what we lack,
But we cannot be drawn to nothing.

So as I am drawn to you, who is everything,
You spare barely a glance for me,
Who is nothing.
I am not and you are
And you do not see me, because I am not there
And your light cannot shine upon me

I would follow you into the dark
If you wished it,
If you permitted it,
even if I burn
. along the way
