Pattern 99 vs gold seal?

Skating Advice

Looking for advice on choosing between a pattern 99 blade versus a gold seal blade. Currently using a coronation ace lite which I am not a fan of and that’s the reason for the switch. My single jumps are pretty good but my spins need tons and tons of work. From what I’ve read, gold seal seemed like the better route but one of my coaches recommended the pattern 99s instead (and the other said gold seal 🤦🏻‍♀️)

What issue do you have with spins? Traveling? Both the gold seal and the p99 have an 8 foot rocker. The Coronation ace is 7 which makes turning and spinning easier. If your trouble with spins is centering them, the 8 will make it even more difficult for you to find your sweet spot.

The MK phantom imo is the best of both worlds. 7 rocker with a larger toe pick than the coronation ace. Though the trade off ime is it is harder to land jumps with a nice running edge than when I skate in a p99.

My issue with spinning is finding the sweet spot. I’ve been reading that the rocker length is not as significant as the rocker “profile,” would you agree with that?

I have skated in both - I found pattern 99’s harder to spin in, gold seals much easier. That said, I currently skate in phantoms - I like the 7’ radius better, and the 17” spin rocker is almost the best of both of the others - not as flat as the pattern 99 but not as “tippy” feeling up front as the gold seal is. The drag picks on all 3 are really similar (the rest of the pick cluster is obviously different) which is most of what you “feel” while skating.

If anyone is curious, I ended up going with gold seals. I found a pristine pair for sale through a fellow skater for an amazing deal so I decided to go for it. LOVE them. Everything is better with them.
