No One Wants to Read Your Poems

Poem

No one wants to read your poems because a poem rarely dazzles usually lays limp a hollow insect pinned to paper and only once in a blue moon do you turn the page to find a poem buzzing to life and you smile as it stings you

right on your lip

No one wants to read your poems because a poem always evades translation always flies fast and hard a Voynich Manuscript thrown from a getaway car directly at your skull and when you come to your senses pages spilled across the sidewalk all you can say is

wow, nice imagery

No one wants to read your poems because a poem may be bad not simply in terms of quality but deeper a rotting apple at the bottom of the barrel a satanic verse on the back page hinting hidden histories until the corruption creeping upward bursts

and soils the carpet

No one wants to read your poems unless they’re a lover or perhaps your mother and then they don’t quite want to read a poem they want to read the fact that you’ve written a poem they want to read you you the fact of you pages and pages of you or perhaps they just want to be polite

if the love’s gone

So sometimes

no one wants to read your poems

because you,

weighing the odds,

weighted by possibilities,

never wrote them
