What Schools Teach About Beauty

I did not believe in beauty
because I was not taught
how it could loosen stones
and carry them ashore.
 
When I learned there was more to me
than Xs and Ys, a wall of words broke
and crashed around my body.
 
Now when I teach children to read I say
  "this is how a poem builds beauty"
and when I teach them to write I say
  "this is how you make it your own"—
 
and so set to raising cairns
with letters at my feet.
